Help with photographer/ color scheme question

Hi Everyone!
I posted a few weeks ago about suggestion of a photographer. While they were all amazing recommendations, all of them were either booked on our wedding day or too expensive. So, I wanted to post again to see if anyone had anymore recommendations. One first important question I have is:
What is the standard amount to pay for a photographer? I know it is one of the most expensive things, which I do not mind.

We are looking for someone who offers a package including wedding day and engagement. I really like unique candid photos. Since we are getting married in downtown Raleigh, I would love to have someone do our engagement photos in downtown in fun, neat places. If anyone has recommendations that aren't EXTREMELY expensive, please let me know!!

The next question I had is about color. My fiance and I are very non traditional..I mean, we are getting married in a lounge! I really am not into the bright colors for our wedding. I love neutral colors and that is why I have decided that I would love gray as the main color. When I told my future mother-in-law, she pretty much said, "gray is for winter and fall, not for summer." I mean, I understand it is a darker/bland color, but with a touch of color in flowers, I think it could look great and very clean looking. What does everyone think?

Sam

I don't know what you consider expensive.  And I don't remember your PP so I don't know who was recommended to you.  But even if I said it before, I'm going to recommend our photographer again.  Erica is awesome, we're still obsessed with our photos and I didn't really think she was expensive.  www.ericaletchworth.com

I don't think there is a "standard" amount to pay.  Photos were important to us, the're not important to some people.  We picked our date partially based off of Erica's availability.  Other things that people pay a lot of attention to (like toasting flutes or cake servers for example) didn't matter to me.  It doesn't matter what's "standard".  Decide how much of a priority you want to put on photography, and decide on a budget based on that.  Then see what you can find.

I think you can use whatever color you want.  If you don't want to hear negative comments from FMIL (or whomever), then stop discussing details with her.

We just tried to pick a gray paint color based off of the weathered wooden boards on the dock at the beach.  You don't get much more Summery than that.

I think you could work grey into a nice color scheme, maybe call it taupe, griege or pewter to avoid freaking your MIL out!  We are using Andress Photography for our wedding, they have packages in the 1500$ range.  They are based in Charlotte but most photographers will travel so it's worth a shot!  If 1500$ sounds too expensive try looking on craigslist, maybe you can find a deal on there!

Gray and yellow is my favorite! Check out some of the inspiration boards. I think it looks very summery and happy!

Check out Melody with Aria Images Photography (click). She's based in Wilmington but has shot a bunch of weddings in Raleigh. I don't know exactly what your photography budget is, but her engagement sessions in 2011 are $250 but they're increasing to $300 in 2012. For our wedding in May 2012, we're paying $1,500 for 5 hours of coverage. I imagine the price would be a little higher because she'd be travelling but I think we're getting a heck of a deal for the quality. You can see our engagement sneak peek photos on my planning blog. Good luck!

Also, I don't think there's anything wrong with using grey in the summer! Pair it with yellow, teal, or any other brighter color and it will look beautiful.

Check out Lisha Myers, if you haven't already. She did e-pics & our rehearsal dinner & was very reasonable. And I totally think gray is year round--and that it's your call. I've seen it paired with yellow quite a bit. It's just such a great neutral you can pair it with about anything.

I think it's your day and you have whatever color you want.  There is no set this is summer this is winter color.  Your day should be how you want it to be.  As far as Photographers, my bridal portaits and engagment portaits I'm having Lisa Ennis from the Fuqay area to do them.  She has a facebook (Lisa Ennis Photography)  she's really good and has a venue that let's her shoot there for free. There is another girl named Brittany Whitley who owns Kiss of Country Photography in Four Oaks NC and she does great work.  We are still undecieded about who we are hiring for our wedding.  She also has a facebook.

I have their phone numbers so if you would like them you can just PM Me.

    good luck

Try Jenn Smith (jennsmithstudio.com) - she was awesome and really went above and beyond for our engagement photos, my bridals, a boudoir shoot and the wedding! Her packages are incredibly reasonable and she'll work with you if you need something even cheaper than her standard packages. She's based in Winston but travels anywhere.

I think grey is a really beautiful and versatile color! Check out some inspiration boards, but if you're interested in making it more "summery" you can definitely use a bright color against it to really pop. I've also seen a deep purple and grey scheme turn out beautifully.

    Good luck!

Check out Emily M. Jones.  She is in Raleigh.  I was going to use her if the photographer from my church was not available.  She has a website.  I think she charges $1000

Hey you guys! Careful booking photogs that are too inexpensive. I have been shooting a long time and you see people come and go. There is always a chance of catching an amazing photog on the upswing of their career and getting them when they are first starting out and the PP is low, but at the end of the day if the price is too low then there is a reason. To be able to stay in business for the long run, have up to date equipment, back up equipment, buisness insurance, reliable computers, software and data backup systems  you need to be able to charge enough to STAY in buisness. Since most of my brides book us at least a year in advance and most of the time they start the album process at least 6 months after their date, I think that they would want me to be able to stay in buisness and deliver the product that they already paid me for. Just some food for thought!! Tongue out
