Rehoboth Beach?

Hi ladies, Zoe here!  I typically post in the September, CT & Etiquette boards but I need some local info.  FI & I are looking for a place to go for a few days after our wedding.  (Our real honeymoon will be in Europe some where next summer.)  So Labor Day week...we will be there probably Monday through Friday.

I got a whole bunch of brochures from Maine to Maryland and one of the places we are looking at is Rehoboth Beach.  While looking for nightlife, we really only found gay bars, which isn't a big deal to us, but we just want to make sure there are going to be places to go at night, and that everything isn't going to close too early.  Seems to be very family-oriented too...so any advice you have would be great!  Thanks!

PS - any other good places in Delaware to vacation would be appreciated as well.  Cool

I grew up around Atlantic City, NJ, and recommend going there if you're looking for an adult vacation with lots to do.  You may need to book asap to get a decent rate on hotels in the area.  Feel free to PM me if you want more info on S. Jersey places to go!

Thanks, unfortunately FI does not like AC.  Ironically enough, he was at a bachelor party and didn't find the place very exciting!

Speaking of South Jersey, we were considering Cape May, I used to go with the fam when I was younger.

FI wasn't looking in the right places lol.  How can it not beexciting when there are bars and clubs all over (from beach bars to techno-playing clubs, the whole range of places to go) and the best part is that you can stay up as late as you want!  The casinos are really boring in my opinion, but that's because I don't gamble.  The Borgata and Tropicana are the best places to go for all-in-one dining, shopping and partying.

Cape May is very nice for a romantic getaway, but not much partying!  You can find a few restaurant bars but that's about it.

Have you considered Sea Isle City?  That's a nice town that also has bars.

You might also want to look at Ocean City, MD or if you're in for a really long drive check out Virginia Beach, VA.

Oh, and Dewey Beach, DE.  I've never been there, but a bunch of people from college used to go and they loved it.

    Hi,

Just thought I'd throw out a few suggestions.  All of the PPs hit on most of the major vacation towns in southern DE....choosing one really depends on what you are looking for - nightlife or more of a romantic getaway.  Dewey Beach is predominantly a college vacation town, so if you are looking for a quieter place to stay I probably would not recommend Dewey; however that's where your nightlife will be (people that I know from Fenwick Island go there to go out frequently during the summer).

Fenwick Island, DE is another option.  Fenwick is pretty small, pretty quiet as far as places to stay, but close enough to Ocean City, MD that you could hit some of the big nightlife spots (Fager's Island, Seacrets, etc).  There's even the "pool bar" at the Econolodge that features live music on the weekends (a favorite spot for my FI and me).  I may be biased since I live there, but it is a very nice place to stay.  The only thing that can be difficult is finding parking to go to the beach if you  stay on the bay side and wish to drive to the beach.

Bethany Beach, DE is about 5 miles south of Fenwick, so still close enough to Ocean City.  You could also get to Dewey Beach fairly easily.  Bethany has a (small) boardwalk with some shops lining the main roads into town.  I'm not sure about bars/nightlife..I can't think of any off the top of my head, but like I said it's close enough to the other areas that you could separate the nightlife from the romantic part of your trip if you wanted.

Ocean City, MD is a big tourist destination.  There are tons of places to go out, go out to eat, and there's the boardwalk that spans from (I think - around 27th street to the inlet).  There are many hotels, condos, and rental properties to choose from.  Just keep in mind that labor day weekend it will still be fairly busy/a lot of people around.

Rehoboth Beach - I probably won't be too helpful, as I don't visit there too often.  The outlets are a big attraction for shopping, but I don't really know about the nightlife.

Sorry that this turned into a book, but since I live down there, I thought I might be able to give you a few opinions.  HTH!  If you have any other questions feel free to  ask!

Having spent so much time in the beach area because of my family living down there, I have some suggestions...

While Rehoboth is known for its gay population, during the day it's a great time.  It's got the boardwalk which is tons of fun, and the outlets for shopping.  Plus there are great restaurants (1776 is reallly nice for a great dress up dinner) in the area but not directly on the boardwalk.  You also have the movie theaters and golf courses and puttputt and the like in the area.

Dewey is definitely known as a college getaway, and can get very rowdy.  While there are some fun restaurants, IMO, it's not worth it- the cops swarm all over the town, and there's just too many issues.

Bethany is definitely family friendly, but can be on the more pricier side for a beach house.  The area is lovely tho.

The nice thing about Rehoboth/Bethany/Dewey is it's centrally located.  IMO, that is why I would stay in that area...You are close to Lewes (which is great small town to walk around...and you definitely need to get King's Ice Cream...drooling about it now!  It's got great little shops and has a very small town welcoming feel), and also within driving distance to Ocean City (definitely a tourist town, but it's got Seacrets...nuff said about that!).  Plus, remember that staying in DE eliminates sales tax!

I am not too fond of Fenwick Island unless you really want to be secluded.  We take our Youth Group there every year (a member at church owns a beach house down there and lets us stay for free), and there really isn't much to do.  I also am not fond of it because if you are buying any type of food to cook yourself, they don't really have supermarkets of any type (more like convience stores).  At least Rehoboth/Bethany/Dewey have Food Lion/Superfresh/etc (and Wal-Mart).

Those are my thoughts.  I have been to NJ beaches a couple of times, and IMO, I find them more overpriced than DE beaches, and they don't have the shopping that DE does (I love the outlets).  Though I do enjoy Wildwood; I love the rides :)  I am not a huge lay-on-the-beach person though, which is why I like DE more; I think there is more other things to do.  If you like the beach tho, both are good.

    Good luck with your seach/decision!
