DJ Concerns

I am getting married in November and I started looking for DJs recently.  I found one online that I like a lot.  I like his website, it was very straight foward with the price, which I liked and he's great at responding quickly via email.

One concern... is it standard for a DJ to not meet with you and do everything through email?  He emailed me the contract as well and said we'd meet a few weeks before the wedding to go over music and names in the wedding party.

I guess I'm just nervous!

Thanks!

It would definitely concern me. I think it's important to meet your DJ and get to know he/she and their style. Appearance and professionalism are important when it comes to the person that will be the emcee of your reception. If you're nervous, I'd request to meet with him. And if he doesn't want to meet, I'd go elsewhere... just my opinion!

we have done everything with our DJ via phone and email but we're also out of state. i think if he won't meet with you-that's an issue. You should definitely request to meet with him. Who is your DJ? maybe you can ask if anyone on the boards has experience with him.

Ask for an in person meeting.  I can't imagine he/she would refuse to meet with you.  However, if the DJ would not met in person, I would steer clear and find someone else.  It's very standard practice to met your DJ in person.

Definitely meet with the DJ in person.  Anyone can have a great webmaster to build an awesome website.

I would meet in person. But if your already having concerns maybe you should look around at other people.

I would definatley meet your DJ in person if possible.  The DJ is one of the most important factors of where your reception is going to go.  And you need to make it clear where you want it to go.  I was even able to see my DJ perform at other weddings/parties. I never made it but the fact that he offered that was a reasurrance.  If he won't meet you I'd take my business elsewhere.  That would just leave me to believe he has something to hide.

With so many DJs in the area if this guy is unwilling to meet I would just look into someone else. Its one thing for you to chose to not meet with him and a whole different situation if the DJ refuses to set up an in person meeting. This is not the norm for DJs in the area.

Thanks for all the advice!  I really appreciate it!

I'm definitely going to keep looking.  I've received a bunch of emails from DJs in the area over the past few days.

A few I've received emails from... (any opinions are greatly appreciated!)

    All4You (top choice so far)
    Sound Design
    All Occasion DJs
    Xtreme Soundz
    Rhythm Productions

and on a side note, I've emailed back and forth with Victor from Party Time, who is unavailable on my date, but I wanted to mention I think he is awesome!  He spent 3 hours emailing back and forth with me yesterday, even though he was unavailable for my wedding, giving me tips and his thoughts on the DJ with the no contact rule... and also recommended a few others DJs!

    Thanks again everyone!

That is so wonderful that Victor has been steering you in the right direction! He’s our DJ and is super nice and professional. That stinks he wasn’t available for your date! But the other choices you have are great too– definitely meet all of them :-)

We're using Suzanne from Moondance and aren't meeting her until a few weeks before the wedding because we're out of the country.  But, she's been great by email and I'm trusting other knotties who have given her good reviews.  Have you asked for a rant/rave on this DJ?  Maybe other RI brides could give you some info.
