As you lose weight, does MFP automatically adjust the amount of calories you should be consuming?  Or is this something I need to adjust myself?

    It will automatically adjust. It didn't adjust mine until I lost over 10 lbs. After that it adjusted me to net 1200 calories/day. It won't ever allow you to net below that. If it already has you at a 1200 calorie limit it will not change no matter how much you lose.
