I can't NOT drink it!

I know soda is bad, and I am slowly weening myself off. I'm fine with this. BUT I am obsessed with sweet tea. I'm using less and less sugar but I know I can't stop drinking it.

Is this ok to drink on a normal basis? Or should it be a "treat" and drink sparingly? Is it really that bad for you? What if I used truvia or something? Does that make it healthier? (sorry for the million questions) Basically any health information anyone has on tea/sweet tea would be extremely helpful.

I wish I could just drink water but sweet tea is my weakness.

Re: I can't NOT drink it!

  • How much sugar are you at at this point?

I know some people put PACKETS upon PACKETS in there. If you've only got 1 or 2 or something I wouldn't worry too much.

Do you drink hot tea at all? If you like hot tea you may find a switch to unsweetened iced tea easier. I LOVE the unsweetened stuff...but I also drink my coffee and tea w/o sugar. Occasionally I do the McDonald's sweet tea because let's be honest that crap is awesome.

And how much per day do you drink approx?

  • Not too much actually. I can go a couple days without it, then I drink one 12 oz cup, and usually refill it. And lately when I have been drinking it, it has been at work, so I don't know how much sugar they put in. It's not as sweet as McDs, it's fairly "mild" if that is the word. Is 12-24 oz every couple days ok?

I don't like coffee (I tolerate mochas and vanilla lattes and stuff) and don't drink hot tea, it has no flavor! I love chai tea, hot or cold, though.
  • can you use splenda instead of regular sugar?  Sweet Tea really isn't good for you -- it's empty calories -- plus it stains your teeth! :)  I was also obsessed with sweet tea -- then I started weight watchers and saw JUST how bad it was and decided it wasn't worth it!  But 1 cup with 3 packets of splenda is still no points

Sweet tea is definitely a good thing to cut out! I am from Canada so only had Sweet Tea for the first time when I visited Georgia (Atlanta & Savannah) last year. I had sweet tea everywhere we went just to experience it! I couldn't believe how SWEET it was! The worst was from Zaxby's- it was as sweet to me as drinking a melted banana popsicle! The more I drank it the more I got used to it and I grew to like it!

Anyway, I know one of the best things you can do to lose weight is to stop drinking your calories. Drink water instead of soda or juice or alcohol.

My worst vice with this was my morning Starbucks. I was going with a full-fat mocha with whipped cream. Yikes. Every morning. Now every morning I drink hot Earl Gray tea with a splash of skim milk- no sugar.

I think that if you LOOOVE sweet tea and can't live without it then maybe once a week would be reasonable? Cut way back on the amount of sugar you put in it and watch your portion size. And do more cardio to burn it off. Sugar is in a lot of things but it's really bad in drinks and we don't NEED it.
  • I don't think 12-24 ounces every couple of days will set you back too much, but it might be a good idea to make it yourself so you can control the amount of sugar to the minimum that still tastes okay to you.  Also I heard drinking through a straw is supposed to help keep it from staining your teeth.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Someone at work told me that it takes 2 months for your body to metabolize Splenda because it is so processed.  I would say, if you must, try it with Truvia, or even better, green (less processed) stevia.  Sweet Tea should definitely be a once-in-a-while thing - not something you have everyday.
  • I love sweet tea and soda (all drinks really!) as well so I totally feel your pain.  I've started buying the Sweet Tea flavored MiO.  Its kind of a liquid version of the Crystal light packets that you add to water.  You can add as much or as little as you want.  I've found that I can add a squirt or two to a botte of water and it tasted exactly like iced tea.

I love this stuff - it doesn't have that fake sugar taste. Plus Im drinking a ton more water now, especially at work.  I would definitely recommend it if you're trying to cut down on the beverage habit :)
  • I love sweet tea too. I recently cut it out of my diet (too much sugar and I went Primal!). Instead I drink skinny water- pitcher of water with sliced cucumber, lemon and mint leaves. Not the same thing but its better than plain water. :)
