Was I too harsh?

A girlfriend of mine texted me last night and asked if this dress was too 'formal' for our wedding. I showed it to FI, and he said 'that's ridiculous.' To me, it was too close to white/ivory and looks a little like my dress.

Her dress:

My dress:

My response to her was: 'maybe a little. normally I'd say it's fine but it reminds me a little of my dress :) unless you get it in a bright color?'

Re: Was I too harsh?

  • Nope, I think what you said wasn't harsh. She asked your opinion before hand because it matters to her. She at least has the knowledge to do with what she wishes. :)

If you blew up at her ON the day *which I know you wouldn't do, lol* then THAT would be harsh!
  • No, you weren't too harsh.  Like pp said, she asked you for your opinion and you simply gave it to her.  I think it's fine!
  • I dont think you were to harsh.. She knew it may be a little over the top so she asked. I think you answered her nicely.

  • No, not too harsh, just honest.  At least she asked instead of just showing up in it I suppose!

  • I think it was too dressy for a wedding. Unless you were doing some big formal black tie event. I think of wedding dresses as short or like a sweater dress. That looked too formal. And I think the way you played it off as reminding you of your dress was perfect. She will then not be tempted to still get it. No one wants to look like the bride.
  • Thanks everyone! She handled it really well and even said that she normally wouldn't wear a long dress to a wedding but that she's been obsessed with finding somewhere to wear this one. I think she's decided to move on to something else, which is great :)

  • Agreed with all PP. If she asked your opinion I think that means she already thought it was too formal. Now that she knows it's similar to your dress I don't think there's any chance she wears it. :-) At least she asked!
  • I agree, I wouldn't want her to wear it either!

  • I don't think it's too harsh and I would have said something similar. It's definitely quite fancy and I wouldn't wear it to a wedding unless it were black tie like Whit mentioned. That being said, I do LOVE that dress and I want one. Now, I need to find it and figure out someplace to wear it. :)

  • You weren't harsh at all!!!
That seems like a very reasonable answer. And if she didn't want your honest opinion she wouldn't have asked you at all!
