Have some entertainment at about the middle of the dinner when things get a little slow and people are somewhat hungry between courses, such as a singer, a local band, a magician, dancers, somethng reflective of your heritage or background.

We had a DIY fauxtobooth. We also had live music and dancing. We figured that was enough.

I wouldn't worry too much depending on your crowd. A lot of weddings I've been to - people are so excited to see people they don't get to see often so most people chat and catch up. I have extended family that treat them as reunions practically! I think a wedding night is plenty full after dinner gets started, although I would say to watch that time between the ceremony and reception, because even with cocktail hour, that is the time when guests seem to get impatient and cranky for waiting too long.

I had my heart set on a photobooth, but the cost was out of our budget. But, I pointed out to FI that although the photobooth would be fun, unique and entertaining, I felt it would be too much of a distraction. I wouldn't want to either a) be constantly pulled off the dance floor or away from guests to take pictures or b) have an empty dance floor/upset guests because they are all in a line waiting to take photos.

Treat your guests like the adults they are. They know how to socialize, visit, chat, catch up, mingle and generally behave in a social setting without having "entertainment" there.

In addition, I agree with pp that singers, dancers, magicians, etc. are passive activities that stop a party. People have to stop their socializing to passively stare at someone else performing. That would annoy me. I'd rather catch up with friends and family. If I want to go to a performance, I'll buy theater tickets.

We had an open bar and dancing. That and good food was really all that was required.

A reception is just a party. So we did what we do at any other party: sat around, ate, drank, and chatted. There was no dancing. People still seemed to enjoy themselves.

Nothing we have an open bar and dancing....I'm not splitting up groups of people that know each other so I think people will enjoy themselves just fine.

We danced and we drank and we ate. I think those are all the things you need for a good party. In between courses, we talked to all the people we hadn't seen in a while.

we're having a combination mexican/italian buffet at our reception, with a few kegs and open seating as far as the chart goes. we're also going to have dancing and probably a few speeches and time to talk with our guests. it's a time to celebrate love and life and we're definitely looking forward to the party!
