Jamaica vs. Riviera Maya

I'm debating where to go on our honeymoon, Jamaica or Riviera Maya. My fiance and I are looking for an all-inclusice resort in February. Qualities we are looking for include beachfront, room service, with at least 3 a la carte restaurants, not neccessarily adults only but it would be nice. Any resort/destination recommendations would be appreciated!

check out Secrets resorts. . . they have resorts in both locations, and have some crazy good deals going on right now.  Me and my fiance are going for our honeymoon to one of their properties for 7 nights and got a deal where we only have to pay for 3 :)
  • We went to Riviera Maya over Jamaica because it was known to be safer off the resort. I heard a lot of people say that the resorts in Jamaice tell you not to leave without an escort. We had a great time and wandered around Playa Del Carmen and took buses to the excurions. It was great. And much more affordable.

I agree with this. With the resorts we were looking at the prices were pretty similar, but I did hear it was safer if you want to go off the resort to do any shopping or excursions. We are staying in Cancun (was going to be Riviera Maya, but we fell in love with The Royal Cancun) and I have read so many reviews that you should be fine exploring the area a little but and doing excursions off the resort. Our resort even offers a one hour Mini Cooper test drive, lol.
It was a very tough decision for us too (I still would like to visit Jamaica sometime), but my best advice is to just compare the resorts and pick the one that really pulls you in. That's what we did and we couldn't be more pleased with our decision!

I've never been to Jamaica, but we felt SUPER safe going off the resort property when we stayed at the Royal Playa del Carmen. Here's my post-HM review:

Of the two Cancun was our favorite. So much so that we are going back and staying at The Royal next year. I do have reviews and pics of both if your interested, in the link above my siggy pic.

That's awesome to hear. Your reviews of your trip to Cancun was what finalized our decision to go there in May! We can't wait :)

  • I highly recommend the couples resorts in Jamaica, they have two in Ocho Rios and two in Negril, we stayed at Tower Isle in Ocho Rios and wouldnt trade our experience there for anything in the world, they have all the things you mentioned, restaurants 3 a la carte and 1 buffet, room service, beach front location. I havea full review in my wedding bio, we are already planning our 5 year anniversary trip there!
  • We just got back from Secrets Silversands in Cancun. We had an amazing time! Would defintely reccommend it!
  • We've been to both and I'd say Riviera Maya hands down. It's so much prettier there, the waves are fun to play in, and your money will go further so you could get a nicer room/stay longer. Plus it's much safer to go exploring on your own off the resort. We didn't feel as safe in Jamaica as we did in RM.
  • I prefer Mexico over Jamaica any day.  We are actually going to Paradisus La Perla next month for our one year anniversary.
