  Think about it, the favors could be a handful of M&M's in a cheap gauze-like bag you can get cheap from Oriental Trading company and a ribbons.
  Having personalized ribbon and/or personalized M&Ms could drive up the cost.
  
  A candy bar.... you need more than just M&Ms. You want a variety of different candy and enough for everyone to get some of each. You also need to make sure there are more than 300 bags/boxes to hold the candy in because you know inevitably people are going to go back for seconds. AND you have all those extras left over that you have to now transport back home or just chuck out (or give away to the venue staff lol). Not to mention that depending on what venue you use, you might have to supply your own dishes to hold the candy in.
  
  I would definitely ask around to other girls here who have done this because I'm sure they might have some thrifty options for you.
  
  Some venues offer a candy bar option. I would check with them and see what the cost would come out to. That might make it cheaper.

  A candy bar can be very expensive,my candy station cost over $500.00 for the candy,bags,jars ect.....
  
  you can do regular favors that cost way less depending on the favor that you want..

  It all depends on how much candy you get, what type, and how you package & display it. Comparing it to other favors then, of course, depends on what your alternative is. I made tile coasters for my guests and got each lady a sandalwood fan (to go with our theme) and I know that I spent less than what a candy bar would have cost. But if you were under the impression that it was one of the cheapest options out there, I would say that it is not.

  This.  It was much more than I thought it would be.  Mine was around $400 (for 150).  My table favors (mini-champagne bottles) were around $200.
  
  If you don't want candy in your wedding colors and instead just do regular wrapped candy you can buy locally, this can help cut down the cost.  
  
  Honestly, if I had 250-300 guests, I would have skipped favors altogether.

  If you DO a candy bar- ask to borrow jars from friends and family... it obviously is cheaper and the variety of jars gives the candy station character. 

  
  

  It obviously also depends on what kind of candy you get. But honestly- if you are gonna do cheap indiv. wrapped candies (like you would get for halloween), I just wouldn't do it. I wouldn't want to get candy that I could go to the store and buy myself.
