Tahiti - Bora Bora?

Tahiti - Bora Bora is my ideal honeymoon. Is anyone else planning a honeymoon here?

Re: Tahiti - Bora Bora?

  • I went on my HM there back in 2004 as part of my first marriage. I have been there 4 other times since. I'm more than happy to answer any questions- I have been to almost all of the tourist islands there and have step foot on, or stayed at, almost all of the resorts in Moorea and Bora Bora.

  • Wow would love any advice!

What islands would you recomend - do you recomened just going to one, or traveling between?

What is it like getting there? Are flights easy to find?

Also, if you do not mind, how expensive is it? We would be able to use air miles to get there, so a flight is not an issue, but how much do hotel rooms typically run?

    Thanks for any help!

  • There are only direct flights out of LAX, either on Air Tahiti Nui or Air France. The Air Tahiti Nui flights are the most frequent. What islands you should visit and how many will depend on what you want to do, see, how long you have to travel, and what your budget is. Most people visit Moorea and Bora Bora for their first trip. I visited Taha'a and Bora Bora on my first trip since I wanted something a bit off the beaten path and something secluded and intimate. A typical 7-9 days in the islands will cost around $8K-$10K depending on the hotels you choose. Yours will be slightly less if you can use miles. Some of my trips have been over $15K, some much less. A typical garden bungalow will run around $300-$400/night and an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora can run anywhere from $800/night to well over $1K/night. Again, depends on the hotel. Pricing also happens to be better from November-May, with the best deals in the January-April timeframe. Going over the holidays will be more expensive. I would spend no less than 3 nights on any one island, but preferrably 4-5 nights. Moorea will be the least expensive (well, Tahiti is, but most do not stay there more than 1-2 nights), followed by Huahine, with Bora Bora and Taha'a being the most expensive. The Tuamotus are great for a smaller hotel experience and also great for diving!

  • We are going to Moorea and Bora Bora.  Staying in a deluxe garden bungalow with private plunge pool in Moorea to cut costs and then an overwater in Bora Bora.  Still spending over $10k for 2 weeks, but that includes all flights, breakfast everyday and dinner in Bora Bora.

We just got back from French Polynesia and it was amazing!!! Fantastic trip. We did it a little differently than most - 7 days on Moorea and 1 day on Tahiti. One day on Tahiti was plenty. Our reasoning for doing most of the trip on Moorea was that a) I did not want to get on another flight to get to Bora Bora after the long-haul trip from NYC and b) H and I wanted an active honeymoon and Moorea had the best options as far as excursions and activities (diving, ATV-ing, dolphin watching, etc). We stayed at the Hilton Moorea and it was great, by far the nicest on the island (we stopped in at both the Intercontinental and the Sofitel as departure points for some of our excursions). Not totally sure what we spent, but I would guess around $10-12K. Research the flights carefully, as you want to take the midnight flight out of LAX to get to Tahiti, which doesn't run everyday, at least on Air France (great airline, by the way). This drove our departure and return dates a little more than we would have liked. Let me know if you have more questions. It was a magical trip and I highly recommend it to everyone!!

I have dealt with several over the years. Gotahiti.com is who I used to book my first two trips. Tahiti Legends is also a great resource. I have also dealt with Easy Escapes Travel. I also highly recommend visiting tahiti-tourisme.com and entering in your zip code. You can find a Tahiti certified agent in your area.

  • A tad late here, but hi everyone!

The fiance and I just recently said to hell with a full blown wedding and have decided on a wedding/honeymoon in Bora Bora.  After seeing pictures of those turquoise waters and over water bungalows my heart melted! (I'm in Minnesota--aka land of the 8 month winter haha!) Has anyone actually gotten married in Bora Bora or Tahiti?  It's looking like in total it's going to be about $10k+.... Does that sound right?

Also, has anyone booked their trip yet?  I'm not sure if it would be best to book through a travel agent or try to do it all myself online... I feel like a travel agent would have a lot more knowledge about the new marriage laws and would be able to hopefully set us up with the activities (snorkeling, etc) and the wedding stuff too--photographer, etc.

Oh and gongratualtions to all you newlyweds and newly engaged ladies! ♥
