using your ipod as a DJ

I am thinking of using my ipod as my DJ for my reception....has anyone done this? I am also going to need to rent speaker and a mic from a vendor....haven't looked into that yet.

Does anyone have a thoughts on this? I'm sure you guys do! And that's what I'm looking for! TIA!

This is what I'm doing. I've heard mixed reviews on it though. I found a playlist that somebody used for their wedding that had a good mix of dance and slow songs. If you google wedding playlists you'll find a lot of examples.

I personally would not go the ipod route. It seems like it would be a bit stressful, but depending on the type of reception you have, it could work very well.

Just keep in mind that a DJ will help maintain your timeline throughout the reception, as well as set a tone or mood for various parts of the evening using music.

I think the only time that using an ipod would work w/o a hitch is if you are having a very low-key, relaxed reception with no urgency of a time for eating, cake-cutting, special dances, etc.

I agree with emimayor.  It depends on the type of wedding you are having.  I personally would not do it.

We did it, and I have mixed views on it.  Ours was an afternoon, outdoor reception with a lot of older family as guests.  It was probably folly to think that we would get many people dancing just because of that.

That said, it wasn't too difficult to get the speakers and mic, and we had friends who helped make sure the right songs were played for our special dances when we needed them.

depending on the tone of the wedding, i think this could be a great way to save money & personalize your reception a bit more. we're hoping to use an ipod at our wedding. mainly because we're picky when it comes to music & a few of our married friends have warned us that they gave their dj's 'do not play' lists, and most songs on the list were played. even though our wedding is going to be very casual & fun, i cringe at the idea of our guests dancing to YMCA, or the chicken dance. the only thing that would worry me about using an ipod is it dying or freezing (as mine does pretty often). then you're kind of screwed.

check with your venue. if use of a sound system comes with the rental, they should be able to tell you if it is ipod capable. otherwise, i think you might have to rent equipment.

I agree with Emi and TCU.  I almost went the iPod way but our DJ kept things going and kept us moving.  Otherwise, Bill and I would have just spent all evening talking to our guests and not a single minute of it on the dancefloor.

We are planning on using an Ipod to cut costs. We are not planning on dancing so the music is just going to be background noise

I am with robindina on this too.

We are using an ipod as well and having my matron of honor MC the special dances for us.

However, this is to say because his and my family dont really get down and boogy ;) so it will just be more for background music.

I would much rather social with my guest then do the shuffle haha!

    Hope this helps!

No one really danced at our wedding a whole lot either, but it was good to have a DJ to keep us on task for our other dances and for the cutting of the cake.  If you have someone who will do those things for you, then you'll probably be okay.  However, I'm still glad that I spent the money on a DJ.  Besides, it probably would have cost me a bit of money just getting all those songs that we wanted to use so it was probably a wash for me.

If you're not having a formal wedding with dancing, then it can work--many people do it.  But I do not recommend it for an evening wedding with dancing,  dinner, etc.  Like the PP said, the DJ does so much more than just play the music--he sets the tone, keeps things flowing and on time, etc.  A good DJ will not play the Chicken Dance if you tell him not to.

We are thinking about using our iPod, only because we are having a mid afternoon reception and a lot of our guests are older and we do not plan on dancing. We do not even plan on doing a first dance or any dancing at all. We just want the background music.

We are getting a DJ only because he is one of my friends brothers and he gave me a discounted rate but when I talked to other girls who had DJ's they said it made their wedding so much better because they were able to keep them on a time line and let them know ok we need to do your dance now, its time for cake, etc etc and I need that lol

I am planning on not having a DJ. We are inviting almost strictly family members  whom are mostly older. We are not planning anything w/ dancing .
