Wedding Woes

It's Thursday, y'all

Dear Prudence,
A close friend of mine unfortunately was diagnosed with HIV about two years ago. We are part of a circle of close gay friends. We have been extremely supportive of him, as he is young and nobody wants such a life-altering illness. He avoided dating, as well as sex dates, until he met the person who seems to be the man of his dreams. His boyfriend does not have HIV, and we figured that our friend would tell him his own status soon enough. But it became apparent that he hadn't informed his partner and has avoided doing so for the past year. I assumed they were using protection but the other night I asked the boyfriend about it. He responded, “Of course we don't! We've been together for a year now and are monogamous.” I am in shock. My friend is being bizarrely protected by everybody with people advising that I stay out of their business. I have no idea how to tackle this situation. I feel that my friend's partner deserves to know, but how do I tell him, or who does it?

Re: It's Thursday, y'all

  • MrsC, I can't figure out if you're a man/woman, gay/straight,what, but you are one screwed up cookie!

If I'm totally honest, first thing I'd do is confront friend and find out for sure if he'd told new boyfriend or not.  If he hadn't, I'd accept that I was losing this friendship and I'd tell the new boyfriend.

Mainly b/c if new boyfriend were my BFF and I found out this happened to him, I'd be incredibly angry and devastated for BFF.  It's one thing if BFF went into it with open eyes; I'd probably be uncomfortable but he's a grown man and I'd love/support him NMW.  But to be fooled?  Hell to the no.

Isn't this also illegal in some states now?
  • I don't think Prudie is smart enough to answer a question this serious.

    I agree with V though.
  • V, yes it's illegal in some states, that was my first thought too.

MrsConn, your BFF is a jerk.

Non-disclosure is illegal here.  We just a big case not too long ago and the guy got some pretty significant time in prison.
  • I am curious about these sex dates of which you speak.

    ??

I think you need more coffee.
  • wtf is a "sex date"? maybe i am sheltered, but i never heard of this term.

so he's basically trying to give his partner HIV? i would figure out a way to tell the partner myself. this is not a MYOB situation.

  • I'm assuming by sex dates, he means he participated in finding a "date" for nothing other than sex.  LIke, you find the person, meet somewhere for a bang and then everyone goes home.

For some reason I am blanking on the name of the app that allows you to do this really easily now.  Basically you register and your phone will vibrate whenever anyone else within your specified physical range (feet, miles, etc) and sexual preferences is also registered.  You check out each other's ads and if approved, meet up, have sex and leave.

    Well... :)

For serious though, it's because of my love for online gossip.  It was brought up during the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes divorce and also Paris Hilton was recorded talking smack about the app (how everyone on there is gross and has AIDS).
  • one of the canadian courts just ruled that this wasn't so illegal.
    I got stabby about it.
^that particular article is, uh, leaning opposite to how I felt about it.

this one is a touch more balanced:
