Off the Grid - Wedding Venue

Interested in anybody who has had there wedding reception at Off the Grid. We are close to booking, but as I live out-of-state I would love to get a first hand perspective! Was the area really bad--it dosn't look too hot. But, did the guest care?

Also, did  you hire the in-house caterer or have someone else do it?

Any additional information is very much appreciated.

My wedding info:
Wedding at Church
125 Guests
5 piece jazz/funk band (for Free!--love family)
$12-15K budget for everything!

I am not having my wedding at off the grid, but it was one of the first places I visited, so I can speak to the area. It is not a very nice part of town, which is one of the main reasons we ended up not booking there--the location itself was also just inconvenient for us. I loved the place, though so it was a tough decision. Honestly though if you just have good maps for your guests you should be fine. IIRC, they provide a parking attendant, is that right? At any rate I would recommend having a reliable security person to watch the parking lot just in case. Honestly though you should be fine.

I visited Off the Grid it is in a very sketchy part of town.  I didn't even see a parking lot, just a grassy area, so I'm not sure where guests would park.  We pulled up, looked around, and my mom said 'no way'. so we left without going inside.  It was hard to find, and too far away from the church for us to consider.

A coworker actually went inside when looking, but said the layout was terrible for her - they were expecting 250 people and there wasn't enough room on 1 floor for all the guests to mingle.  She also said the owner wasn't very professional, and was joking about getting wasted at their wedding.  (for the record, he was super nice when I talked to him)

Overall, I wouldn't recommend the place. HTH!

    Good info. Thanks!

My family works with a security company so I know I can get some extra security out there for a decent price. And the owner seemed nice enough on the phone.

I'm just having difficulty finding a nice loft type venue for 125 for under $3,000 for the first weekend in October. I looked into event1013 in Plano, but it seemed on the tight side (longer type room, not very wide).

Any suggestions on venues? Would prefer to stay in Dallas area.

I don't know the prices or capacities, but these are the ones always mentioned:

Lofty Spaces (same owner as Off the Grid)
    Three Three Three
2616 Commerce (right by an interstate though so could be noisy)
    Hickory Street Annex
    7 Senses
    Third space
    Studio 1019

Are you looking to have the ceremony and reception in the same place? Also, does that budget include catering, or just a rental fee?

The coworker that looked at Off the Grid ended up booking hers at Edison's Dallas - the girls there are so nice, and it seems like a really great place (it was just too far from my church to consider).

You may also look at 2616 Commerce - I looked at pricing and there's an option for 125 people that ranges from 1500-3500.  Also, I'm not sure about price, but I looked at damagazine and they listed Studios1019 - looks like a really cool venue!

Just the reception and I'd like it to include rental fee, chairs and tables. We have a seperate budget for catering. And I did check with Edison's, but they were $3,500 and they look like they are in the same neighborhood (just a couple of blocks) as Off the Grid, which is $2,750. Still waiting to hear from someone who held there wedding there... will have to wait and see.

It depends on what you mean by loft type venue.  But you might try The Loft at Plano.  It should be in your budget.

I wasn't impressed with the owner when I inquired about it. I moved on.

Edision's is a nice venue, HORRIBLE Customer Service!

We just toured The Loft @ Gilley's. It was really nice inside but we decided it wasn't the right fit for us because we need a space for outdoor ceremony. The rental fee is $1000-1500 depending on F&B and it had a cool loft feel and a great view of downtown. Plus it is right across the street from the new police station, so you should be pretty safe. We got married there last September.  The neighborhood wasn't the best but the owner provided a parking attendant.  In addition, any extra food goes to the neighborhood. So it's sort of an agreement with the neighborhood. So it should be safe. We didn't have any issues.

We ended up using Gil's as our caterer as it was difficult working with the in-house caterer.  They didn't seem very organized.

I can provide more details if needed.  Please contact me separately.

We are getting married at Off The Grid next month.  My friends got married there last year and we loved their wedding so much we decided to have ours there, too.  Email me if you have any questions.  Good luck!

My best friend lives in a loft down the street from Off the Grid. Yes, its not the greatest neighborhood but I don't ever feel unsafe. Its just a little gritty, thats all.
  • We are so excited to have our wedding and reception at Off the Grid. The area is by the American Beauty Lofts where many artists live and otherwise, you will hardly see a soul, so not what I would call a "bad area." The venue is fabulous and modern and a perfect mix of eclectic charm and industrial-style luxury. (Three stories of open spaces with lots of windows.)  The owner is very flexible and easy to work with. He doesn't hit you with a million regulations and extra fees and yet I have the confidence that he knows what he is doing. He will actually include much of the set-up, extra lights, chandelier decorations, etc, for very affordable rates. (Some is even inclluded if you use his catering service.) We are pleased that this venue is very hassle free, offers many extra perks, and has an amazing view of the city. I will say however, that if you are going for a place that looks very polished, you may want to stick with a hotel instead.
  • We are looking at getting married there as well.  Will be looking at the space sometime today.

We are excited to reivew the site.
