Need advice for trip to NYC

Hi ladies,

I'm planning on taking a trip to NYC in June.  I would like to do the touristy things- see Central Park, Broadway, Times Square, etc.  I've been looking in to hotels and don't know where I should stay.  I would appreciate any feedback regarding things to do, places to stay, things to see, and things to stay away from.

Your help is greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance.

What is your budget? That's a good starting point.

Personally, I would stay away from any hotels in Times Square or Herald Square. They're going to be more expensive and you're going to be right in the heart of the most touristy area in NYC. I live on the Upper West Side, which is much more residential, with some great restaurants and cute shops. The Beacon Hotel and On the Ave are two hotels near us that are nice. Not sure how much they are per night.

My family just booked the Excelsior Hotel on the Upper West Side. The rates are very affordable and I heard a rumor that if you ask at check in, they will upgrade your room to one with a view of Central Park for free (fingers crossed!). That area is one of the best for brunch. I suggest checking out Yelp.com for restaurant reviews. They also have an app that shows you a map of highly rated places in the area- super helpful! As far as sightseeing goes, I recommend the South Street Seaport, the Highline, and walking the Brooklyn Bridge. NYC.go has a pretty exhaustive list of activities if you'd like more ideas.

I always recommend the Flatotel. Pretty affordable, clean & very convenient.

Go to the NYC Nest board, and click on the "Visting NYC? Read this first!" link in the green bar up top.  We have lots of great ideas there.

I live at Upper West Side, so many good places to eat and shop and close to the park and the museum of natural history.  And, a lot of subway you can take there as well.  Downtown (Lower East side/Village) are great place to stay.  I don't recommend people stay near Times Square.....too expensive and too crowded.

I second staying away from Times Square, it's a madhouse and while it might be fun to visit once, you will get frustrated if you have to weave through those crowds every day. As long as you stay in a decent area that's within walking distance of a subway you can get anywhere in the city with ease.

I've stayed at the Tribeca Grand before, it's more of a boutique hotel and therefore a little pricey. But not sure what you're looking for so I figured I'd throw it out there.

For sightseeing, make sure you go to some museums. The big art museum is the Metropolitain Museum of Art and there is the Natural History Museum for science buffs, but there's a museum for everything. And you should spend some time walking through Central Park. You can go to Central Park's website and get a map and walk around to people watch. There's a few popular sites, but it's more about just seeing what's going on
