WWII Era Style

Anyone else incorporating any WW II/1930s-40s style and history into their wedding? I hadn't originally chosen it as a theme but it all fell into place for us. I love 1930s fashion, so my mom and I are making a 30's style evening gown for my dress. We also picked the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History for our venue (because we're both giant science geeks), so the theme came together.

Now we're starting to think about some of the smaller details (Invites, decor, etc.) and I don't have any definite ideas. I'd love to hear what you all are doing!

Re: WWII Era Style

  • I found this website http://www.askginka.com/themes/1940%27s-WWII-theme-wedding-party.htm when searching for ideas for my 1950's wedding.

I don't know how rustic or elegant your wedding is going to be but maybe you can incorporate some military type items like maybe a canteen to hold flowers or have custom dog tags made for favors and use them as napkin rings?

If you're going more elegant how about a movie marquee with your names... You could totally go black and white high style movie star flare.

  • Did you see the sticky at the top of the board? Nukke has collected a huge list of websites according to era that could be helpflul. What style are you going for? Are you doing more of a WWII or a classic 30s look? I ask because to me they are very, very different & there are so many things you could do between them.

  • I'm incorporating some 30's-40's fashion and movies from that time.  I'm also WWII pin-up girls for some things, like my BM's totes and photo share cards.
  • COOL Venue! :)

Personally, I think of a lot of wood and brass: Browns and golds, when I think of that era.  I also think of deep blue-hued reds (maroons)--Warm Bachelor Pad kind of coloring.
It could be really neat to explore using old-school coca-cola bottles/glasses, or even green-tinted glass for the centerpieces/decor to pop against the dark colors.

    What's your color scheme?

  • We are planning a 40's themed wedding.  Still havent nailed down a venue.  We were thinking about doing the invities to look like telegraphs.  :)  We have a location in mind that is WWII themed rest. but its about 3 hours from where we live and only my family lives down there.  Cant decide.  We were thinking about decorating with some neat propaganda posters (we are both slightly off in that sense and it would amuse us).  We are actually thinking about a wedding and fam party down there and a reception up here.  There is an outdoor location I am considering that has the outdoor lighing and stuff and I think that would fit in really well.
