Cew, Bec, Heels, and other NC-ers

I kind of am thinking of moving to NC (not for a bit though) and I'm wondering what area you'd recommend?

I was originally thinking SC but NC gets colder and has more mountains (no?) which would make T very happy.

Re: Cew, Bec, Heels, and other NC-ers

  • Yay! That would be so cool. You have no idea how happy having you in NC would make me. I would recommend western NC, but I'm partial. I think it all depends on several different factors like:

    1. Do you want to be near the shore, mountains, or in between?
    2. Do you need to be in a particular area because of the type of work that you are looking for?
    3. Do you need to be near a big city or small town?

I love Winston Salem, but if I had to move and was assured that I could find work, I'd move back to Wilmington in a heartbeat, but wouldn't mind living in Asheville or Charlotte either.
  • 1. I personally do not care. Tyler would probably prefer to not be by the shore.
    2. I need anywhere that has an audiologist or anywhere that has medical offices that need a front desk girl :)
    3. I love both. I think I prefer small towns outside of big cities.

I really want to move to the Carolinas. I think it would/ could make T and I very happy. I was actually leaning towards western, its where I've been before and seems more "us"
  • Yay!! Do it!!

(I have no recs now, but I will this time next year)

  • I didn't think T would go fot it because in the past when I mentioned the Carolinas he just wrinkled his nose. LAst night he said "find and job and we'll move" whoo!
  • Yeah, Rach. When does your fine ass get down here?

If you want to be in the western part / the mountains, I would go with Asheville. I love that city. You've been there before, right? My FFIL is an  audiologist in Goldsboro, which is about an hour from the coast, but he might be a resource for you in terms of offices around the state.
  • As of July 1st, we will be residents of your fine state! We're coming down in a few weeks to scout out the different places we could live...

  • That is so cool. Did you all pick a city yet? I know you were tossing around Durham and Chapel Hill or Cary, right?
  • Well, the towns in play are Greensboro, Elon, Meabon, Burlington, or Chapel Hill/Durham. So, Um, ya. We've pretty much got no clue Embarassed

  • Yes, I love Asheville.
Um, yes. Any audiologist would be an amazing resource. I'm working on getting a hearing aid dispensing license which would open me up to a whole other job.

Rach, exciting! I will be in NC the 2nd week of July :D

Well, since I'm only about 20 minutes from Greensboro, I'm definitely going to suggest that. Burlington has grown a lot recently and has gotten pretty cool. Elon is mainly just a college town (as I'm sure you know :). I am not a fan of Durham at all. And Chapel Hill is just okay. Too expensive, imo.
  • I did see the cutest 3 bedroom house for rent (in Raleigh, I think) all utilities, cable and internet included. Only $600 a month.
  • Wow. That's a steal. Seriously.
  • Yea. I was so close to just up and moving haha. Our lease doesn't end til August but I don't think it would be the best time to move then

<div>I'd prefer the Greensboro area--while I like big cities, I like visiting them more (I've only ever lived in small towns...so, I could be wrong). We can't afford Chapel Hill--but Rich wants to be able to live in a big city while we can (read: pre kids), and thinks there will be more job opportunities for me there than in Greensboro.</div><div>
</div><div>Right now, I'm trying not to think about it--because when I think about it, I realize I'm going to be unemployed in two months, and that we have to pack our whole house up and move many states away...and I hate packing.</div>

  • Um, I'm an all around liar. It's a 2 bedroom in Charlotte for$700.

Still, I pay $880 for rent alone for a 1 bedroom apartment.

Fi was born and raised in NC and went to school in Wilmington. He's taken me there a couple times and I absolutely love it. Think Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill - both were/are filmed around there!

I know I'm late to this, but RachNRich, I wouldn't recommend the Mebane area.  I've lived in Raleigh all my life and used to volunteer at a place in Mebane that cares for exotic animals (Tigers, Lions, Servals, etc.)  Anyway, Mebane is a very small town that doesn't have much in it.  If you're looking for a bigger city feel, Mebane is probably not a good fit.

<div>Interesting--good to know! We're only considering it because it's close to the bigger towns, but much cheaper.</div>

  • Yay...I love NC! Lived there for 7 years in college and afterwards.

I'm biased, but I love the research triangle area (raleigh-durham-chapel hill). There are so many universities there it makes for a great cultural scene. And unlike cew, I think Durham is awesome, actually, it's quirky, less trafficky and overbuilt than Raleigh and Chapel Hill, and has a lot of cool history. But I like to live places with a lot of history and cool architecture, so that colors my view. The whole research triangle area has historically had a great economy, but I haven't been there in a while so I don't know how it's faring in this recession.

I lived in Wilmington on the coast for a few years, which is beautiful, but it's a bit of a drive to a bigger city, the job selection is more limited, and it sounds like you guys wouldn't be interested in living on the coast anyway.

I don't have a lot of experience with the Piedmont area or Charlotte. Charlotte is a big, new city, though, so if you like that sort of thing you should look in to it. I remember terrible traffic in the piedmont area when my ex-H commuted there, but not much else.

Asheville is another amazing quirky small town; it's out in the mountains. If you love being outdoors, hiking, mountain biking, and the whole funky appalachian artsy kind of vibe it would be an awesome place to live. Not positive about job opportunities, though.

My favorite place in NC is Joyce Kilmer national forest. It's almost in Tennesse, two hours west of asheville. It's one of two virgin forests left in the eastern united states (the other is the everglades). When you hike through there you expect a dinosaur to come marching through. Totally incredible.

  • Dude, please move here!  You will love it.  I know I pick on it a lot, but I've lived here since I was 10 and there is really no where else I would rather be, quirks and all!

Roxy, that first house you posted is in Colins Park.  I used to live just a couple blocks from there.  It's a newly-gentrified neighborhood and it's close to everything.  I'm very partial to that area.  Please show me any house you consider in Charlotte because there are a lot of seemingly good deals in scary-ass parts of town.  I've lived all over Charlotte so I know the area really well.  Charlotte has a lot of modern convenience and plenty to do.  The downside is it is expensive--real estate prices haven't dropped there as much as they have in other parts of the country.  It's also very "city"--it doesn't have the "southern" charm the rest of the state has, and there is lots of traffic and hustle and bustle.

I'm rather partial to Western NC.  I like Winston-Salem a lot.  I think it's a great town for young people, and it's not nearly as overwhelming as Charlotte or Raleigh.  The area has a lot of culture while still maintaining the NC feel.  Charlotte doesn't have near as much personality, IMO.  Asheville is also a cultural hot-spot.  It's a bit liberal for my taste, but a lot of people from out of the area fee right at home there.

Most of my close friends from high school went to college in the Research Triangle, and all of them stayed there in Raleigh, and they love it.  From what I hear, Raleigh and Cary are great places to live.  I'm not real big on Durham.  I agree with cew that Chapel Hill is over-priced.  The traffic there would drive me batty.

Rach, I'm counting down the months until you get here!  You'll be in town just in time for all the wine, BBQ, and chili festivals!

  • Oh, and if you live anywhere between Asheville and the Triangle, you're only 3-4 hours from the nearest beach.  Charlotte's only about 2 1/2 hours from Myrtle Beach, SC.

Regarding living in SC, I think you'd be much happier in NC. The only area in SC that I really recommend is Greenville.  I think anywhere else might be a major culture shock for just about anyone.  I'll leave it at that.  ;)

  • I may get a chance to move to the research triangle area in about a year and a half, and I really hope I do!
