Military Brides

I'm an idiot

So I have weird dreams and a lot of time I will get woken up and think for a minute that someone is in my apartment, usually because a noise woke me up.

So I woke up at around 3am because of a noise, and when I sat up, by  my bedroom door there was a shadow that looked like someone. In my rational mind now, I know I'm crazy, but being half asleep and such, what do I do? Yell? throw something? No. I say HELLO! Because apparently a person would answer me anyway??

Also, I did not get up and investigate, again in my irrational mind, I figured if someone is in the apartment, if I go back to sleep they will steal something and leave me alone, where as, if I got up, they would be forced to hurt me.

Then I laid there for a few minutes, heard no noises at all, and told myself that I need to stop having weird dreams, and went back to sleep.

Oh my goodness. I hate that feeling!!
I still get it a lot because my roommate forgets to lock the apartment door when she comes home really late and I'm asleep. So sometimes I'll wake up in the middle of the night and the door will be unlocked and I'll sit and think..."Holy crap. Somebody could have come in while I was asleep" and then I start looking around to see if anything is missing.

Now I just lock the door to my room when I go to bed. :)

Oh Sami even with melatonin I have crazy dreams. I didn't take it last night because I didn't need to, but yeah, my dreams have always been bizarre. I think part of it is still that this place is "new" for me. So I am still not 100% used to all the strange noises.

Haha I never get out of bed when I hear or think I see things.  I just close my eyes and try to fall back asleep.

I used to have a hard time sleeping through the night when H was gone and would have some crazy dreams.  But then I got an alarm system installed and sleep great.  You could always look into that G.  The installation was like $2-300, but then it's only $38 a month.  To me, it's absolutely worth the $1.20 or whatever it is a night to get a good night's sleep.

</div><div>We discussed the alarm system, but our apartment is so small and really the only way to get in is the door since we face the parking lot and the other window and balcony face the parking lot (and the balcony is screened in). So it would be noticeable if somneone started scaling my building and cutting my screen. My mom told me there are things you can put on the door if it opens, I might invest in that for now.  If we had a bigger space or house, then I would probably do the alarm.

Yeah you could definitely just put things on the door then.  If anything you could put loud bells on it so that you would know if someone opened it.  It definitely help me sleep so much better at night when he is gone, and I know he feels a lot better while he's gone knowing that we have it.

We live in a pretty safe area too, but it's hard when you live in a mostly military community and it's public knowledge when the ship is gone.  Plus nobody really knows their neighbors here so nobody would realize if some strange person was entering our house.

Posted by dnbeach12[/QUOTE]<div>Yeah, I don't have the ship issue or anything here and people go on trainings and such so its always random when people are gone because it can be at any time. I don't like though that people can figure out that H is gone because they will constantly see me alone. I think when he leaves for his next deployment I will probably invest in something for the door, just in case. It doesn't hurt to be too safe obviously.

There is an alarm you can buy to hang on your door.  You turn it on when you go to sleep.  Once armed, if someone touches either side of the door knob, an alarm sounds.  My aunt uses one when she travels.

</div><div>I've never seen anything like that, that's pretty cool.  I could have just gotten that probably instead of the whole alarm system for our townhouse.  </div>

Ohh one time when my FI was on a det., I woke in the middle of the night and heard real noises downstairs, like footsteps and stuff. I just lay there moitionless, too terrified to move. The rational part of me knew it was probably my FI coming home early and surprising me, but the other part of me was all "oh my god an intruder!" I was in the same mind-set, if I just pretend to be asleep, they would take what they wanted and leave me alone. Finally I worked up the nerve to grab my phone and try calling my FI. Thank goodness, I heard his phone go off downstairs. I ran down and instead of hugging him, being thankful after not seeing him for a few weeks...I yelled at him!!

haha oh ggirl. I know exactly what you mean.

I become torn between getting up and staying in bed, and I convince myself to stay in bed because I think "well, if they're just trying to rob me and I get up and investigate, they might change their minds and shoot me, but if I stay in bed they might not kill me" hahahahaha.

but, I loled at the part of saying "hello?"... this makes me think of horror movies. I think it'd be hilarious if in a horror movie the intruder answered back "yeah, I'm just breaking into your house. Want a sandwich before I kill you?"

In all seriousness though, those things for the door aren't too expensive- you should def look into one.

Honestly I don't know what else I would've done! I had no weapon to protect myself, and no where good to hide that they wouldn't find me. We should probably get some sort of alarm system! Also, I want FI to get me a gun and go to a shooting range. I would feel much safer having a gun and knowing how to use it.

We live in a small community so all the neighbors know each other. I don't wake up or worry for noises at home. I do get paranoid about the bar though, when I close up alone. I start seeing shadows move out of the corner of my eye, and get jumpy taking out the trash when I hear any random noises. I lock the doors as soon as I get into my car.

Hmm....I'm kind of wondering if there may be some underlying anxiety about something else that is surfacing as the dreams? Not that I'm an expert by a long shot, but it kind of sounds like that might be something to consider.

Oh man, that's rough!  And kinda funny.  Glad everything was okay!

I've always felt safe at home, which might be naive, but I'm glad I don't fear intruders.  When we were kids, my brother and I would concoct really creative ways of dealing with intruders (we watched too much "Home Alone").  They usually involved my Dad's various power tools - were vengeful children with a sick imagination.

The one time I really freaked was last summer while FI was gone and his 20 year old sister was staying with me in the guest room.  At 4am, I heard crazy howling, like someone was being killed.  I woke up panicked, grabbed my pepper spray and a bat (not sure which I would have used first) and went out in the living room, thinking someone was attacking FSIL (to be honest, I never thought it was an intruder - I thought perhaps she had brought someone home from a club and he had attacked her).

However, I got into the living room and realized the noise was coming from my bedroom, which really freaked me out as the door had been locked when I was sleeping.  So I tip-toed back in, and realized the noise was coming from my bathroom, and I had no idea who could have been getting killed in my bathroom.  So I open the door with the pepper spray in front of me, and turn on the light.... and there was nothing!  Now I was really freaked, but within 10 seconds, the noise started up again - it was under the bathtub!!!!  Took my hazy sleepy brain about 15 seconds of utter panic to realize it was feral cats that had gotten under our house and were having a massive fight.  Yikes!
