WR: Pet Boarding

What are you guys doing with your furbabies the day of the wedding?

We are getting married out of town about 2 hours away, and we will be going up the day before for the rehearsal and then staying the night.  We have a 3yr old orange tabby who is quite capable of taking care of himself for the time that we will be gone. We've left him for longer. However, its our 2 year old pitbull mix that I'm worried about. The venue is NOT pet friendly, at least not to my 60 lb "beast". Nor is the hotel we are staying. The person who usually watches her for us will be with us for those 2 days. Now I'm looking into boarding her. People make jokes that having pets is like having kids, to an extent, because its hard to make plans to be out of town when you have to make sure they are taken care of. Now to pick a place here in SA or in Austin that will be close to our hotel, so we can easily pick her up without having to pay for an extra day.

My FMIL actually suggested leaving her out in our backyard with a blanket, food & water!!! Worse, I don't think she was kidding.

Re: WR: Pet Boarding

  • FI and I are very lucky in this area.  Our dog always goes to her breeder when we go away.  She has an amazing time and does very well there.  The breeder only charges me 15 dollars a day, but I pay her about 20 a day because I really appreciate it.  She is going for about 2 weeks around our wedding!
  • We're leaving for the honeymoon 2 days after the wedding and will be gone for most of the day after the wedding anyway so we just decided to take them both to the places their being boarded the day before the wedding and pick them up the day after. I figure it will be less stressful for them to be in one consistent place rather then being in and out of the house and having random people around a lot.

  • I will be boarding my 5 year old yorkie for the first time for the wedding. My family usually watches him when we're away but they'll be with us. We are leaving the day after for our HM and my family will pick him up from the boarding place and he will stay with them while we are away. He loves it too, he misses us, but he loves the attention and cookies he gets at grandma and grandpa's!

  • Our 100 lb pup has grown accustom to the boarding place.  He actually loves it, but I'm worried he will think we abandoned him during our honeymoon!  Unfortunately FI's parents are older and as our pup greatly exceeded his expected weight, their ability to watch him diminished.  We travel a lot, so Otto is used to going there, where he gets to play all day!

My game plan thus far is to probably drop him off mid-morning on the Friday before the wedding, since FI isn't staying at our house that night before and pick him up on Monday morning.  Then I have the week off between, so Otto will get to be home with mom, and then we will probably drop him off again Friday for the other wedding we are going to (or maybe FI's parents can take him just for that night since we don't leave until Sunday at noon....then we will be gone for 2 wks.

Sorry for the long post, just planning it out while I type!  ;)  Either way, he is in capable hands and I'm not worried about anything but him just missing us a bunch....and vice versa!

  • LIke PP said, I'm not worried about the cat. She would probably love to be on her own. The St Bernard however is a different story. I do believe FI is planning on staying home the night before the wedding so no need to board him then. We just bought the house next door to my FILs so I'm assuming he is just going over there to get ready. As long as FI feeds the dog breakfast and lunch before the wedding, Romeo will be fine to wait for dinner. FI will run home after the reception ends (or may get his parents to do it) to let the dog out for a pee.

  • FI and I have three relatively selfsufficient kitties. They'll fend for themselves the day of the wedding, we're only a few minutes drive from the venue so FI can just feed them before he leaves. One of our BMs will be 'babysitting' during our honeymoon.

  • Our Saint Bernard pup is our flowergirl so she'll be at the ceremony.  After the ceremony, a friend will take her back to my house hopefully where my father will pick her up to watch her after the wedding. We're only about 15 minutes away from the ceremony/reception location.
  • We have a cat.  FI is planning on spending the night before the wedding at our apartment, so the kitty will only be alone for 1 night.  We've left him alone for 3 full days before, just with plenty of food and his water fountain (he's very self sufficient).  For the honeymoon, we are going to have our friends that live nearby check on him every other day  - make sure he has food and water and to give him some attention.
  • Our wedding is near our home so the dogs will be staying home and we will be back to let them out.  We are leaving for our honeymoon a few days after the wedding and they will be spending that week with my sister.

  • My parents have my dogs brother so my pupthe bro and our other dog will go to my parents. We will need a dog sitter for that night so my parents will have their neighbor let them out once and feed them. They will stay there for the HM too.

  • I have two cats, and we have tossed around a couple ideas. Since we're only away on our HM 3 nights, we could stop in Sunday on our way to NH to say hi and do the food/water thing and let them fend for themselves until we get back Wednesday night. We also might ask FFIL if he'd like to stay at our house for those three days and take care of them, or we may ask my parents to check on them one day and FSIL to check another day since they live nearby.
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • I'm pretty sure Tinkerbell is going to be staying with FI's parents. They have a chiuaua that we call her little doggy boyfriend haha. The kitties are self sufficient. I'll prob talk to FI's sister and see if she can pop in and check on them a few times if we are able to go on a honeymoon. Its only a few minutes to our house from there's...5 tops!

  • FI will be at his apartment with our dig until about 130 the day of the wedding. Then my sister's boyfriend will let him out, and we'll be home by 11 that night. During our honeymoon, my sister will be staying at the apartment sometimes, and my mom, his mom and his brother will be helping out. Boswell has too much separation anxiety to be boarded. His last family gave him up after 4 1/2 years, so I'm afraid he'd think it's happening again.
