alternative grooms dinner venue- looking for ideas

we are getting married september 9th at Spill the Wine. we are intending on doing a grooms dinner the night before and inviting all out of town guests. i am looking for ideas on an alternative/offbeat venue, as we will have a wide mix of people and think that might help break the ice a bit. we were looking at bryant lake bowl, elsies or psycho suzi's as options but none are available on a friday. any suggestions? we are hoping to do something that is not a crazy distance from our wedding venue as most people (including us) will be staying close. i am looking for ideas, even if they are a bit more traditional, as it has been 6 years since i have lived in minneapolis.
any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • What about a river boat? I know there is at least 1 that is super close to Spill the Wine.
  • Cooks of Crocus Hill in Edina wouldn't be a bad drive and you can rent out the space if they don't already have a class scheduled.

[QUOTE]If you have a home base an offbeat idea would be to hire one of the local food trucks to come and feed your guests.  Our next door neighbors did that for their daughter's wedding last fall. Everyone gathered in the backyard and then the Smack Shack served up lobster rolls from the street in front of the house.  They all seemed to have a blast and our entire block smelled amazing.   Here's a  link  <-clicky to some info. and a directory of food trucks in Mpls.

you could try this bowling alley.  It's in the basement of a church.  Not glamorous at all, but it's pretty reasonable to rent and you bring in your own food and drinks.  There are 6 lanes I think, so you could accomodate 36 ppl bowling at a time. We have rented this place for a number of family events.... my sister and BIL got married on a Friday night and had a lot of OOT guests, so rented this Sat night for something for ppl to do while still in town.  It's in St. Paul, not too far from the Xcel Center
