Seriously Considering.....

Eloping.

I cant be the only one who's head is exploding over wedding costs. I really am considering eloping. Im actually 99% of the way to dead set at this point.

  • I wanted to from the beginning but FI said it wasn't fair to our grandmas. He only has one left and I have all of mine but I am the oldest granddaughter.

  • When I say eloping we're talking about taking my remaining grandparents, my parents, my daughter, his mom, his grandma, possibly his brothers, my original MOH, and his Grooms woman. Anyone else can travel on their own and we'll pay the dinner but tiny ceremony at disney with a dinner reception then the next day at the park.

  • The costs just seem rediculous to me. 20k+ to feed 70 people for 5 hours and be stressed or 10k-12k to have 10 people or so a nice meal and a vacation. I really think we know what sounds more reasonable here.

  • FI looked at the costs and said, "Why don't we just elope and have a reception when we get back?"  I laughed and responded, "You just took out the cheap part of the wedding (the ceremony) added a trip (eloping) and kept the expensive part of the whole day!"

We were both shocked at how much it adds up.  I cannot imagine doing it in the DC area where everything is probably so much more expensive.  At least we are in the Midwest.

  • We've looked up and down all around its just not cheap. I'd rather pay 1/2-2/3 and get a nice vacation in than what we're looking at. I'd rather relax than be stressed. All I'm getting right now is stress :/

  • I vote Elope especially since you both want to and have no implied family or social obligation not to.

We almost eloped a few time before we realized that this was the last opportunity for family reunion for the next 8-12 years... And Grandma (my last grandparent) is not getting any healthier :-( For us, it would be selfish not to host a celebration of family weekend especially since we have the means to do it.

  • Before getting engaged, I would have thought that eloping could have been an option - as in, I wouldn't be against it. However, now I don't think I'd want to. Yes, it is expensive. I'm in NJ where things are pretty ridiculous, but I'm categorizing things into either "budget" or "splurge."

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Seriously Considering..... : Since the ave. price for weddings in Pittsburgh is 30K, I don't even think I want to know the average price is where you live.

Its about the same and thats my issue. I really dont see a point in paying 20-25k after all is said and done for 5 hours when I can pay about 15-17k with a trip to disney and have no hassle let disney do the work.

  • We went to a wedding this weekend of a friend of mine. We discussed with her and another friend or two wedding costs etc and are actually now talking about a slightly larger Disney wedding. FI isnt a dancing person, and I cant really dance for long with my condition. A larger disney wedding would cost a little more but we'd be able to keep it smaller than a semi local wedding which would cost less too and we'd get a vacation. Plus since we arent much of dancers we could have ipod music durning the brunch after our morning wedding with one dance together. After this we would go to epcot, and then do cake cutting with desserts and light appetizers under the fireworks that evening. We will have a mid day quick service meal meet up option as well. What do you ladies think?

That is the same thing that my Fiance said to me.  I told him that was the cheepest and easiet part of the whole wedding thing.  He didn't believe me at first when we first started, but he understands now.
