Facial?

So, I've never had a facial, always had pretty decent skin, but lately I've been breaking out.  i think it's a combo of stress and sweat (I moved from a really dry climate to really humid climate with no a/c in my place).  I'm thinking of getting a facial, my wedding is a month out, is it too late to get one?  I have heard that your skin looks worse after a facial then gradually gets better.

Re: Facial?

  • I wouldn't get a chemical peel, but a gentle cleansing facial should be fine.  Don't have them do any harsh extractions - that can force your skin to break out.

I'd go with someone super reputable and preferably associated with a dermatologists' office.

I switched my skincare about a month ago because my skin (after a move from humid to dry) caused my skin to break out!  I now use Dr. Perricone's wash & toner once a day before bed (if I could afford it, I'd get a Clarisonic Mia - I've heard it's the single best thing you can do for your skin), and I use Origins Brighter By Nature Exfoliant a few times per week.  I also do an Origins Clear Improvement Charcoal Mask once a week, and I always finish each face wash with a light towel dry and Origins Anti-Aging Serum (they said it also works well for acne, though it's marketed for aging - I LOVE it!) and Origins Starting Over moisturizer.

I know that's a lot of products, but if I had to narrow down what's made the biggest difference - the toner, the anti-aging serum, and the exfoliant.  For sure!

    Anniversary

  • I got one for the first time 2 weeks ago after a lifetime of battling acne and my skin looks phenomenal.  Since I had nearly 2 months before the wedding (it was Aug 4, wedding is Sept 29), I let her go crazy with extractions figuring I had time to get worse before it got better.  I never actually got worse, just better and better.  I haven't broken out since (knock on wood) except 1 little pimple that cleared up quickly and I even have my period this week which is when my skin always looks terrible.  I'm going to go again 3 weeks before the wedding to do another cleanse and very very light extractions.  They recommended no closer than 2 weeks but knowing my skin I gave myself an extra week.

Definitely do research before picking a place.  Also, tell them when you wedding is so they know what is going on and if something is a bad call.  My facialist also informed me for my skin type I wasn't exfoliating enough.  Never would have known that so I increased how much I exfoliate now.  So it could just give you good information.  I'd book one ASAP in case your skin does react (either by breaking out or God forbid a reaction to a product they use).  Once your skin is purged professionally you should be able to maintain it until the wedding.
  • Just FYI - for me, I usually have 1-2 days of red skin and a little irritation, then 2 weeks of clear skin, then 1.5 weeks of moderate acne, and then really good skin for another 3-4 weeks.

    Anniversary

  • I thought about getting one. If i can't get it done by next week I won't get it, just in case.

  • I got them twice a year usually and I would say you are fine up to three weeks before. I have learned my skin looks like hell for the 10 days after, but after that it's amazing. Another thing to consider is the Clairsonic Mia, it's a little pricey but when I tell you it's the best skin product I have ever bought.
  • I use the Olay version of the Clarisonic and it has done wonders for my skin. I wouldn't ever splurge on the namebrand but for $20 the Olay one is awesome.

  • I think you'd be fine.  Try to find a Medical Spa for treatment not just an everyday pampering type of spa.  They will be able to help out with the breakouts more and likely won't put oils on your face that could cause more breakouts.  I started getting facials at the beginning of August and added on Glycolic Peels with them.  I have acne scarring on my cheeks and it's made a difference already.  I don't peel for the first 2 days after, and then on day 3 I start peeling for 3 days.  So it's about a week of "down time" where you wouldn't want to schedule anything socially.  Good luck!
