Snarky Brides

Awesome little girl

CN: This 14 year old girl has written a petition to Seventeen magazine, asking them to commit to one non-photoshopped photo spread a month. She wants to see girls who look like her in the magazines, and not be bombarded to unrealistic images. You can sign the petition by clicking on the link in the article.

Re: Awesome little girl

  • This is such an AMAZING idea!
  • I actually don't think airbrushing is that big of a deal.  I'm suspecting I'm in the minority.

<div>Yeah, I don't have a problem with airbrushing to remove blemishes and make minor tweaks.  I'm just not a fan of when they take an already thin model and photoshop another 20lbs off her.  It just doesn't make sense to me.</div>

I think it's a bigger deal to people who are less confident than you.

Young girls are very aware of how they look compared to those around them and the people they see in magazines and on TV.  I think it's mor imporant for Seventeen mag to do this than for an adult mag to make the committment.

<div>This exactly. I've always been a pretty confident person, but I've seen my little cousins looking in the mirror, sucking in their stomachs, pulling up their skirts to make them shorter, calling themselves fat. In my mind, that is not acceptable. Girls (and boys) should be shown that they are beautiful no matter what (keeping in mind that they are a healthy weight). The fact that it was grilled into me from a young age that I was pretty just how I was made it possible for me to ignore the air-brushing that happens in the adult magazines like Cosmo.</div>

It depends on how much airbrushing they do.  If it's minor to remove shine, redness, minor blemishes, etc, then I don't see a big deal with it.  But when it's something like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2gD80jv5ZQ" rel="nofollow">THIS</a>, where they retouch it to impossible, unnatural standards, that's when it's bad for image.

  • I've mentioned before that my SIL is a model.  She's tall and thin and beautiful enough to be intimidating IRL, and yet they photoshop out most of her thighs for pretty much everything she has in print.  I think it's gotten out of control.
  • Yeah Jem, I guess I don't see what the big deal is about that video either.  Everything gets photoshopped, not just models.  I dunno.  I just don't care.

I will agree though, I think it's cool for a teen mag to make that commitment because I can concede that adolescent girls are susceptible to that kind of pressure regarding their image.  I remember being insecure when I was younger, and I still am from time to time.  But I tend to think that if you ARE insecure there's probably some other things at play, there, not just that you look at magazines.  KWIM?

    Anyway.  I digress.

    Agreed 110%
  • You go girl! She's really cute too. I really hope she gets through to them. I think it would do a world of good for teen girls with self esteem issues.
  • Thanks for sharing this!

That's awesome. I think it would be interesting to see what some models look like without any retouching.
  • That's awesome! What a great kid!
