Used gift?

Okay I need an opinion! My sister is getting married in 2 weeks and her and her fiance are definitely not "stuff people" (in their own words) so she's really not that worried about their gifts and all that. That being said, of course we are getting them group gifts (bridale party), a hotel room (jacuzzi suite) for the night of wedding and a wii. NOW my dilemma is I can get them a TON more things for the wii if I buy a gently used one from our local used site. I would inspect it and make sure that it is in great shape, not marked in any way, but for the price of just a system new, I can get
Wii Console (White)
2 Controllers (with Rubber Covers)
2 Nunchuks
Wii Carry Bag (Great for taking the console on the road)

Games
- Mario Kart (with Wheel Accessory)
- Wii Fit (with Balance Board)
- Dance Dance Revolution 2 (with 2 Dance Mats)
- Harvest Moon
- World Series Poker
- Wii Play
- Wii Sports

Would I be a terrible person if I bought that in the interest of being able to get them a lot more bang for the buck?

Re: Used gift?

  • I totally see where you're coming from, but the big scary thing with electronics is if something does go wrong, you (or they) have no recourse.  That gift receipt and warranty or service plan would make me, personally, feel a lot better in this scenario.

How much are we talking here?  Because the Wii is currently at $200 with Wii sports which isn't bad at all.  I have one and love it, and if you can't buy them more games maybe ask someone else to pitch in?
  • We got our Wii used and haven't had any problems with it, but I agree with PP that a new one might be a better idea for a gift.  All the accessories and extra games would be really nice, but the console with the regular remotes and Wii sports, plus maybe one other game (you may as well go used on extra games, as long as they're not too scratched) would be a great start.  You could always get her a balance board or more games or accessories for other gift-giving occassions (holidays, birthdays, etc.).

  • I love my Wii.  If you get the Wii Fit, get Wii FIt Plus - it is better :)

I really enjoy Mario Kart and Sports.  They are good games for parties since they are easy to pick up.

  • Why not try a GameStop instead? That way if something is wrong with the Wii you can take it back, but it's much cheaper because it's used. I bought my FI a used ps3 from GameStop.
  • When we bought our Wii, the price difference between new and used was only $50, so we just bought the new one.  The new one also came with Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, which the used ones did not.  I don't see the problem with buying a used gaming system, just make sure that they have a return policy that will work with this situation if need be.
