A Gift WWYD

I just received an invitation to a close friend's first profession. I can't make it to the ceremony because it's across the country, but I'd like to send a gift. What do you send a cloistered nun as a gift? I'm thinking a case of wine, because I know the whole cloister enjoys a glass or two with dinner on special occasions, so it's something she can enjoy and share with her sisters. Is that appropriate? Is there something better? WWYD?

Re: A Gift WWYD

  • I do remember a friend of mine who was in a convent for awhile telling me that the only time they got to drink wine was when it was donated, so, yes, that strikes me as being a great gift! :-D

  • I think the wine would be nice, if you know it is something that would be appreciated by the community. You might also find out if her community has a "wish list." Many are always looking for donations of basics that they would be tickled to receive, like nice ground coffee or a case of dry goods or the like. If her profession/vows include a vow of poverty, she probably doesn't want much in the way of "stuff."

Regardless, I also think a heartfelt note and assurances of continued prayers would be nice. Maybe even have a mass said for her or her community at your parish -- they usually have a card or something that you could enclose that I'm sure she would appreciate.

  • Biblio-you're right. On their website they do ask for donations of fresh food or GCs to local grocery stores. I think I will send the wine for this in the spirit of celebration, but I nevere know what to send for holidays, so I will refer to the list in the future. I usually just resorts to sending stationary or books of stamps, which she appreciates, but it would be nice to mix it up a bit in the future.

  • I'm so glad that helped. I'm so excited to hear about your friend. What a blessing for everyone! :)
