$$ Dance

Is anyone doing a "Dollar Dance"? Do you know what a "Dollar Dance" is? Just trying to find out if this is a popular thing in FL or just in certain parts of the U.S. or more on tradition....Thanks!

Dollar dance was started in Louisana as a way for the bride and groom to take a honeymoon. Two of my cousins did for both their weddings (they live in Indiana).  Basically the tradition was people pined money to the brides veil during the reception for a chance to dance with her.  Now It is you donate money to the bride and groom (usually an attendante stands next to the dance floor to recieve the money for the dance) and two lines form one to dance with the bride and other for the groom.  doesn't have to be a dollar some people donate more.  It is supposed to be a little extra gift to the bride and groom to get started and it is also a way for guests to spend one on one time with either the bride or groom (though it is short).

Personally some people feel it is a little tacky, but if it is a family tadition for you, they may expect it.

I was at a wedding that did this for a couple I loved, and honestly still thought it was tacky.I had already bought them an expensive gift, and traveled from quite far.

    I know it's a southern thing,but I say avoid it,it just seems greedy.

Interesting....It's definitely not just a southern thing...I am from Michigan, born and raised there, and every wedding I've been to has had one....I can see where it is considered tacky...just trying to figure out if we want to do it...I know my guests would all know what it is, but I dont think all of FI's guests would....

If it's not VERY common among your circle, don't do it. I have been to two weddings with them & both times I have heard a NUMBER of guests remark how silly & tacky it was. I think it looks like you're begging for money... you can dance with your guests for free since they did likely travel & bring you a gift. I just don't think they are received well by many guests.

we are not having one my FI thinks it is tacky as well.  I never said it was exclusively a southern thing. Just said that Louisana is where the tradition started. I also stated my cousins in IN both had one at their wedding.

It's not that uncommon, but I think it depends on your traditions and your crowd. Personally, I have a lot of guests traveling from oversees to attend my wedding and already getting me a gift, so I can't see myself basically asking for more money. Besides, I really think most of my guests from Europe and other places would be horrified.

I had one, it was super fun, and we were finding money stuffed in our clothes all evening. LOL- we got about $85 out of it, it definitely helped with the honeymoon!

I've seen a few variations of it and I don't care for the idea. It's so public, and people tend to feel obligated. I think if they wanted to give extra cash, they are free to put it in a card or something.

I have heard people can get lots and lots of money from this... even enough to pay for all your fun on the honeymoon! Haven't decided yet... but since most of our friends are young, we think it will be fun.
