Dumb idea or cute idea?

FH and I aren't getting married until 9-15-12 so I'm only in the very early planning stages, more like "getting general ideas" stage.  We know we are having the ceremony and reception at my parents farm and FH and my Dad are in the process of designing a "picinic shelter" type building for the reception (and other family events) because for what it would cost to rent a tent for two days we can build a permanent structure....

Anyway, we don't want anything fancy, I'm shooting for "rustic elegance"  and I had an idea, which may suck.  Instead of using your regular old glassware I was thinking of mason jars.  FH and I use them as regular glasses all the time.  So do my parents.  Between us all we probably have two hundred of them!

So, dumb idea or cute?
No, that's not my real name. And FH's name isn't Nun (as in Nun ya bidness) either.

Re: Dumb idea or cute idea?

  • I like it.  But I drank out of mason jars until I was 10 since they were pretty disposable and just the right size for a kid, so I might be biased.  They can also be used as vases or lanterns and candle holders.
  • I've seen some really cute centerpieces with mason jars and might look for some photos of those for inspiration.  I would think twice about the mason jars for glassware though.  Some people may think they are really cute, but others may kind of side eye you.  More importantly, depending on how many people you have, will you even have enough?  Keep in mind that many people will get several drinks throughout the night.  Are you going to have someone doing dishes throughout your party?  I would strongly consider plastic cups for drinks.

  • I didn't think about the whole dish washing thing :)

I like the idea of using them as candle holders or centerpieces.  I think it will be fun to incorporate them in some way, but maybe drinking out of them isn't the best way to do that.  Though FH and I will probably use them for our toasting glasses.

  • I really like the hanging lanterns in the first link and the picture of several mason jars with different size candles in the second:

Love the hanging lanterns, thanks for the links!  That's exactly what I had in mind.  And the directions look pretty simple.

I'm going to have to start buying some different size jars.  All I have are pints right now.  Love the mixing and matching of sizes.

  • i think this is a great idea imgoing mason jar crazy, im using them for the candles, centre pieces and thinking of using them to drink out of too :)
  • I think using the mason jars as decorations is super cute. check out on the vintage board there is a few girls doing similar things that have great bios. also put up an ad on your local craigslist and the local freecycle.org board and im sure you will have plenty donated to you for free/cheap by the time of the wedding. also dont forget to take a look at goodwill/salvation army i see them there all the time
  • I think mason jars would be great.  It won't be elegant at all but if that's not what you are going for, then it will fit your theme.  You could also use them instead of glasses as candle holders or string them up with little led lights inside.

  • Hi!
My own wedding is not until late 2011 / early 2012, so just like you, I'm trying all different things out to decorate with and see how I can be creative and save some money in the process.
Good idea to decorate with the jars: great as candle holders, or to hold your table center-pieces in.  You could also incorporate them as the favors (I have a friend that gave away small ones with candy in them, and made cute labels for them using their computer).

I wouldn't use them to drink out of at the wedding.  IMy only reason is that with that type of cup lip, people are bound to dribble and there goes their outfits.
  • I think that's a super cute idea! But, I also didn't think of the dishwashing dilemma, But I would incorporate them in your reception decor. I'm doing my centerpieces with mason jars with gerbera daisies, as my wedding is also very country themed. Good luck!!

Plastic cups may be a good idea if you are okay with the look of them.  If you are going for an informal wedding though, why can't you just have running tap on hand?  Also, if you are weary that your guests are going to "side-eye" you then maybe they shouldn't be there b/c they may not know you enough to matter...

  • I'm all about doing fun things to make it more unique and eco - friendly, but I agree with most of the women here.  Using the mason jars (and maybe even glass milk bottles) as vases and for decoration would be a super cute touch, but not for glasses.  Maybe just if you have small ones for the kids to use or something.  They are generally thicker and wouldn't break if they slipped through little fingers.  But adults will appreciate drinking out of real glassware.

    Good luck!
  • If you are in the getting ideas stage, you should check out www.younghouselove.com, they have all this info on their super cute backyard wedding. I originally wanted a backyard wedding too and I love their ideas!

And I agree with using them for decoration, and I think it would be kind of cute if you and your FI toasted with them
  • I like the Mason jar idea. Sometimes my friends and I still drink out of them but not everyone feels that way.
If you do go with the Mason jar idea I think you should get the ones with the handles because they are way more user friendly.
