honorarium for your officiant at the St. Louis Cathedral?

Cathedral brides-  if your parish priest or deacon travelled/will travel to officiate at your Cathedral wedding what did/are you giving as an honorarium?  I'm not sure what an acceptable amount is.  Our priest will be travelling from the Northshore (Mandeville) to New Orleans for our rehearsal (a Thursday) and our wedding (the day after, Friday).  Also I am not sure how to handle the reception.  Our priest will obviously be invited, but we are having a seated reception and I'm not sure who I should sit him with?  (Should he want to attend)....we will have nearly 100% out of town guests, and no other parish members are invited, so he won't know anyone....

Re: honorarium for your officiant at the St. Louis Cathedral?

  • My priest is traveling with us from San Antonio (we are obviously paying his expenses, etc.). We meet with him again on Wednesday and I plan on asking if he prefers we make an honorarium donation to our local parish or to the Cathedral as a way of broaching the topic. As far as dinner reception seating goes, I will probably seat him at my family's table where he is most familiar.

  • I am hoping the $2500 fee for the cathedral will cover the donation there!!  :)  I am planning definitely to have the honorarium go to my local parish.   I am just wondering how much is appropriate.
  • I am pretty sure the Cathedral wedding guidelines say no donation is required there (the $2500 fee does cover it, unless they help you find a priest, then a small donation is expected).  I don't know how much is expected, that is why I intend to ask him his preference as a way of bringing the topic up and finding out how much is standard (or how much he expects).  I would imagine if you just ask him, or call your parish office, they will give you some guideline about what is normal in your area.

  • True....I thought about asking at our first pre-marital class.  I know that if the Cathedral helps you procure your officiant the expected honorarium is $250.
  • I think $250 is appropriate. That's the amount we are giving to our priest for our St. Louis Cathedral wedding.
  • Our priest is traveling from Baton Rouge so we gave him a check for $350.
The Cathedral requires a $200 donation if you use one of their priests so we might send Father another check for $100 or so the week before our wedding just to make sure his gas is covered. Gas is so expensive!
