Photographer Engagement Session Fee???

Is it normal for a photographer to ask for the engagement session fee upfront? My photographer isn't charging much but she didn't mention that it needed to be paid upfront so just want to know if this is normal....

Yes, it is a fairly standard practice for photographers to require all or partial payment prior to shooting or at a minimum on the day of the shoot.

Ummm I'm not sure, our engagement session was included as part of our whole photo package, we had to pay a deposit to lock in the date but not a seperate charge for the engagement picture session!

If the engagement shoot is included as a part of your package then your overall deposit should sufice. But if you are purchasing it seperately from a package it will be handled seperately and require its own deposit.

(this is standard practice umongst most pro photos i know, as well as myself)

I'm surprised any photographer charges extra for the engagement session?
I throw it in to all of my weddings, it's great way to meet the clients, become comfortable with them and them with me.

We usually like to work the engagement session into the wedding package. Is is helpful for us to receive the engagement session fees up front; in the event that the wedding is later cancelled (usuaaly one every two years for us) The bride has already covered the fee.
