Small wedding, need help in location!!

I want a small wedding of around 50-60 people.  However, almost all the places we have looked at had a 75 to 100+ minimums.  We are hoping to have an August wedding and having a wedding during the off season does not fit into our work/grad school plans.  A Saturday wedding is what we prefer because all of our guests work and my family and friends do not live in Ct.  Can anyone help us by recommending some places for us to look at?  We have found only one bed and breakfast venue but would love to find more places!

If I remember correctly The Pond House in West Hartford doesn't have a large minimum?  Also, our venue The Mill on the River (South Windsor) has a smaller room downstairs which I think has an 80 person max...something to look into anyway!  Good luck :-)

I am in the same boat as you! In my search I've learned these places could accomodate smaller weddings:
    -The 1820 House in Simsbury
    -Union League in New Haven
-Avon Old Farms Inn (There is also Avon Old Farms Hotel, but I'm not sure if they have minimums)
    -Inn at Middletown
    -Gwyn Careg Inn in Pomfret

    Good luck!

I was in the same boat.  I am having my wedding in June 2011 on Saturday the 11th at The Morgan Suites at Latitude 41 in Mystic Seaport.  One of the rooms has a 45 person max, the other has a 70 max, and you can rent the rooms together.  As long as you meet the $900 food/beverage minimum, there is no site rental feel and you can have the ceremony on site.  Best of all, it's on the river and the Seaport closes to the public at 5:00pm (any ceremony/reception would be at 5:00pm), so you can have the whole Seaport to yourself and your wedding party (with the exception if other weddings are going on there) to do photos :)

We had our wedding at The Lounsbury House in Ridgefield.  It's a beautiful Georgian mansion.  It's great for more intimate weddings.  We had about 80 people, but you can fit up to 110 or 120 I think.  The one thing to consider though is that it's not a one stop shop.  You rent the venue and then have to choose your caterer and other vendors.  It's totally doable though.  We had no problem, and it was the exact atmosphere we wanted. (FYI, since it's not an all inclusive place there is no minimum head count.  You rent the venue and the rest is whatever you want to make of it).

I just thought of another one!

Storrowton Inn on the fairgrounds of the Big E (just over the border in Springfield, MA).  I went to a wedding there in May and there were approx. 50 people.

I'm having the wedding at Saybrook Point, I don't know what the min is for August but I am having mine on a Saturday in April of next year and the min was 50 people which worked out for us since we are having about 80 guests.

Or like akulaji said rent the venue and hire a caterer, usually no limit.

If you don't find a place you love definately consider a Sunday. Most palces will bring the minimum down.

Besides the places PP mentioned maybe try looking at upscale restaurants? League Cafe in New Haven or L'escale in Greenwich.
