NWR: Really bummed out! :(

so, my fiance and i each own a car (both are 2002 - volkswaggon and honda) and both of them started having problems in the last week. We took his yesterday - a 1350.00 fix and mine today (turns out my oil leak is going to require placing almost my entire engine/timing belts/whatever else is in there) is going to be even more than that. I'm so upset. We are getting tight on money as it is because of the wedding, and now I will have to take the money out of our "fund" just so we can have one car running. So bummed.

  • I hate unexpected things that end up costing lots of money :( But I can definitely say we've had our fair share of them during this whole process of trying to save & be frugal. So frustrating! Hang in there, everything will work out in the end! :)

    that sucks...

my dad always said that whenever it costs more per year to repair a car than it does to pay a monthly payment, then it's time for a new car.

    hope everything works out!!!

  • I understand how this feels just in the last 6 months we have spent $2000 on FI truck and about $600 on my car. We know I need a new car and it will be our FIRST purchase after the wedding. We are just doing what we have to get by for now.

Sorry you have all this going on! :(
  • Ugh I hate cars! So sorry!

  • I have a love hate relationship with my car, I swear it knows when I have money saved because it always seems to develop problems just when I think that I'm finally getting a bit ahead financially.  cars are necessary evil, most of us can not get by without them.

  • That is frustrating! Sorry! :(
Can you get by with just one car? Fix the cheaper one and wait a bit until you have a little more to fix the other?

  • I'm so sorry!  We're in the same boat.  My car has just been taking up space in the driveway for the last month or so because we can't get it to start.  We replaced the battery and the spark plugs, but still nada...I haven't even had anyone come to look at it because I know it's going to cost more than what my car is worth (it's a '96).  I can't wait to get a new car, but I won't be able to look for one until AFTER the wedding.  I basically took over ownership of FI's car, and I drive him to work or he takes the bus...I don't have the option to take the bus to my 2nd job.  He's been super supportive, and I just keep praying that his car keeps going strong because it's almost as old as mine. :/  I hope things work out for you, keep your head up.  We're in the home stretch!
  • Thanks, girls! I knew I could vent to you and you would understand what a crazy position I'm in (because we are all in it together!). We are paying for the majority of our wedding and this just came as a huge blow since we've been literally putting all of our money into the wedding. And the worst part is - I made FI go to Melting Pot with me last night for restaraunt week (which he didn't want to because it's expensive - even during restaraunt week) so I was feeling extra bummed today when I got the car news because he didn't even want to go (but he did have a good time). Bah! the good news is the mechanic is trying to find a less expensive fix for our cars (he knows we are getting married) so maybe it'll work out ok afterall. I just have terrible luck with this stuff! We were planning on purchasing a new car after the wedding - now I'm just hoping that ONE of our cars makes it that far!

<div>This. My car is slowing getting there. I'm hoping it lasts until next November/December. I know it's not going to make another winter in Pittsburgh, but I need it to last until at least then.</div>

  • I am really sorry! Cars are so unpredictable, especially old ones... mine is a 2001 and I am really lucky it still runs... for now at least.
