Penn State

Has anyone been reading up on this like I have?

If so, thoughts? Do you think Paterno should step down? Do you think he should be okay because he told his boss?

UGH!  I seriously want to know more about the situation with the grad assistant who supposedly walked in on the coach "raping a 10 year old boy in the team shower."  WHY did it take him a whole day to report it, and WHY did he only report it to the head coach??  If I walked in on something like that- the first thing I would do is call the police.  I'm disgusted.

As a teacher, I know it is against the law not to report child abuse. Now, Paterno got off because he told his boss. I'm speechless.

As a teacher, I am legally responsible for telling my boss. As a human, I'm legally responsible for calling the cops. (In this instance, seeing a child get abused).

Also, the grad assistant should be ashamed. I'd like to see if he stopped it right away, like pulled the kid away or walked out. I think he walked out although I don't definitely know that information. If he walked out, there are no words.

Here is an article. I'm definitely am not trying to sound snotty but do you read the news? It's everywhere!

    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11309/1187751-143.stm

CN: A longtime, Penn State assistant coach has had 40 counts of sexual abuse against boys brought against him. He was caught by a graduate assistant naked in a shower with a 10 year old boy doing things that I can't even type here. This was in 2002. The grad assistant told Joe Paterno and he didn't call the cops. JoePa told his boss and he told his boss. No one called the cops for anything. Their response was to tell this old assistant coach he was no longer allowed to bring children on campus.

Anyway, this was brought to light because said coach is now an assistant coach at some school and a kid told his mom he was touched inappropriately. While investigating that, police found out about the locker room story and 7 other boys that were abused by this man.

This whole thing just makes me sick.  I have always like Joe Pa but I think just telling the AD (I think that is what I understood) is just not enough.  I mean the guy still coached there after this for awhile right?  I really do think anyone that knew of these alligations should be gone if it is proven they knew.

It really does make me sad as this program really doesn't have any really bad reports at least as I can remember.

I've read a little about this all day and it just makes me weep for humanity. I really, even in my deepest cynical heart, woudl like to believe that if something like that were happening to my child that and someone caught it, that they would do something about it. In a similar vein, I was reading today about all of the women who are molested on public transport, and even when they are screaming and chasing down the attacker, no one does anything, not even takes a picture or calls the cops. I just can't imagine walking in on something like what was happening at Penn, which there would be no way to construe in any other way than what it was, and being like, "Oh, I'll just tell this guy at the school, I don't feel a need to corner him and call the cops immediately and then go take a Silkwood shower and bleach out my brain." I Just. Don't. Get. IT.

Gotcha. I might notice it more because I grew up in PA. It's been all over the place in Virginia.

The sad part is that, technically, JoePa didn't do anything criminally wrong. He only had to tell his boss. It's obviously morally wrong not to call the police.

That is what makes me so sad.  I know that JoePa has always been an upstanding and good person and role model.  I just hate to see something like this associated with him.  You know what I mean?

Absolutely. There is 1% of me that feels bad for him. The other 99% obviously is speechless that he didn't do anything else.

I'm heartbroken. I was named after the Lions, and for this to go down makes me so disappointed in JP. I will never feel the same way I did about him.

EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. who saw, heard, or thought anything and didn't call the police is culpable and should be ashamed. Every one.

And, if I may be slightly cyncial, I'm getting the feeling that JoePa is sort of getting off because "he's old and adorable" --at least in my personal social media circle. I know he was not (at least as far as I know) the target of the investigation but that is a HUGE and disgusting thing to only "do the minimum" on. He'll definitely step down, in my opinion.
