B&M Monday

So, because yesterday was so crazy for me, I thought yesterday was Monday and was so confused that no one was B&M-ing.

Now I am happy I didn't start a thread.  =)

Re: B&M Monday

And I suppose I'll go ahead and vent.  Yesterday was a nightmare.  It was move-in day for our camp.  81 eager students and their families piling into our tiny dorm.

First, parents arrived early, as they usually do.  Res Life does not trust us to issue keys to residents, so they have to come over and do it. Since they were not here, we just told the families to take their kids' stuff and leave it outside the correct dorm room and then wait in the lobby, thinking Res Life would be there ASAP.
Then, Res Life was late.  Like 15 minutes late.  By this point, roughly twenty families have arrived, and have begun to form a line that spilled out of the lobby and into the first floor hallway.  And it was HOT.
Then, Res Life realizes they have keys, but no lanyards.  They don't want to hand out keys without lanyards because it's the easiest way to keep everything together.  Lanyard Girl takes another 10 minutes or so.
Then, the now three Res Life employees realize they have keys and lanyards, but no meal cards.  As it turns out, our wonderful conference services intern did not include meal cards with out keys, so no one knew we needed them, and they are now locked away somewhere that none of these three employees can go.
At this point I had nearly all the families lined up outside the door, hot and cranky and getting belligerent.  I did my best to assure them that this was NOT MY FAULT, NOT MY CAMP'S FAULT, but it did little to assuage them.  I offered to take responsibility for getting the meal cards to the students at a later hour, when someone with a brain or a key to this magical locked place becomes available.  When the Res Life girl refused, I thought the parents would start a riot.  I was truly scared for these student workers.
FINALLY someone arrives with meal cards and they start passing out keys, but not without giving the wrong keys to some students.
The worst part is that most of these students are new this year, usually we have mostly returning students, but I am so embarrassed by the display and really worried that all these new parents will say, "To hell with that place" and not send their kids back.

And then to put it all in perspective, an RA from a camp in the dorm next to ours knocked on my door this morning informing me that all the showers in her dorm are broken and could her students please come over and bathe.

    Oh, SMU.

Wow........how does it cost so much to go to SMU and they can't even keep their dorms in check? Please tell me it doesn't go to athletics. *snort*

I was an RA at TTU and never had any issues like that.  Dorms are dorms but our showers always worked, our toilets always worked, and the only time I ever dealt with an angry parent was when one girl's roommate had sex in their room ALL the time and they decided that was somehow my fault even though I didn't know about it until that very moment. :-/  I was only an RA for a year, though.  One year of being placed on a hall comprised entirely of sorority girls = moving into a one bedroom apartment the next year.

I hope things start to get better -- it really sucks to have angry parents in your face about stuff you simply have no control over.  And there's no use telling them that because they will still believe it's your fault and that you DO have control over it. Just take a deep breath and do the best that you can.  It's all anyone can ask of you.  And when they come back to pick up their kiddos and find out they all had a great time and were well-taken care of, I'm sure they'll return. :)

My only real B&M is still my car.  A/C is finally fixed, though...wohoo!!!  Unfortunately the total bill turned out to be $800 instead of the $400 that was expected.  Now to take the car to the repair shop to get a quote to fix the accident damage.  In two weeks, I will have spent $1,800 on this car, and that's a tought pill to swallow.

We have a few more cake tastings to schedule but I have to say on the whole we've been really disappointed in the majority of our tastings.  People want to charge a lot of money for cake that is just "okay."  We did a tasting at a very popular bakery here in the DFW area and there was a piece of hair in my bite of cake. YIKES.  Ruth Robbins' bridal cake was FABULOUS -- loved it, and it's the closest to Cake Guys that I've found.  Ruth is such a sweetheart and we really enjoyed our tasting with her.  Thanks for the recommendations from those who have used her!

Angelsong, yeah, it's NEVER happened like that before and I have been in some way affiliated with this program for the past 13 years.  I did my best to tell all the parents that I'd never experienced this much drama.  I guess in the last few years Conference Services has just gone WAY down hill, so we get like zero help from them.

Also, that really sucks about the hair in your cake.  I think I would die.

@angelsong ~ glad to hear you like Ruth! We had a tasting scheduled with The Cake Guys after all the raves on here, but after we met with her we cancelled. Her prices were so comparable, delivery was cheaper, and we wanted to support businesses in our town if possible. Glad to hear confirmation from others she's as good as we thought she was!!

Which dorm and when? I was in Chitwood 03-05.

I don't mean to complain about how busy work is, but where the eff are all these people coming from? My phone won't stop ringing, which is not like the summer months here.

She is! :)  She's about $150 more than Cake Guys for their Sweet Inspirations Package and they gave us 25 more servings of groom's cake and included delivery.  So Ruth is still more for us personally but I did think her white cake was soooooo yummy!  The chocolate wasn't as good but it was still pretty decent. FI wants a chocolate Grand Marnier cake, which I do NOT like the chocolate/orange mix, so I'm leaving his decision entirely up to him! LOL  I'm super picky about wedding cake, though, and Cake Guys was EXACTLY what I had in mind.  Even though she ends up being more, I still think Ruth's prices are good and very reasonable.  Other bakeries wanted to charge us $200 more for cakes that I felt were half as good!

My B is that my one DIY project has just had the kabash put on it.  I had some card stock in the wedding colors that I was going to put the STD magnets on with little slits in the corners so that they would be a little more sturdy in the envelopes.  Well, there is no room on the sides of the magnet because it JUST fits in the envelope.  See, even when I attempt to be crafty the artsy Gods plot against me.

Oh well, but I did get my STD and now to get addressed and in the mail.

So I got my car back at the Progressive concierge place... I now get to go to the body shop and hope I don't get angry on them. They apparently needed to replace my bumper. In doing so, the failed to put my front plate bracket and plate back on. They didn't put it anywhere in the car for me to put on myself either. They have no idea where it is. So now am I not only running the risk of getting a ticket, but I have vanity alumni plates that cost a lot more to replace.

Oh I just went up there and they found them within two minutes. I may have also had a low cut shirt on to show off the girls.

I took my car to the Progressive Claims Concierge Center, and they took it to a collision place in Addison. Outside of the plate issue (and my $7 in change aka "Sonic tip fund" going missing), they did a really good job on the car.
