Marriage License

Can I get my marriage license in one county, but actually get married in a different county? I know the license has to be returned to the same county that you got it. But I can't find anything about whether or not you have to be married in the same county in which you got the license. Ex: Get the license in Philadelphia County, get married in Dauphin County. Anyone had any experience with this?

  • I am pretty sure that as long as it is in PA, you are good!

  • Nope, it doesn't have to be the same county. Which is good, because some counties charge way more for the license than others.

  • Yes, you can get it in any county. I am inbetween Delco & Chesco and Delco charges less so I will go there. :)

  • Yup, any county.

I don't know if it matters to you or not but our officiate told us that some county licenses look a lot better than others.  So if you plan on displaying it maybe that should play into your decision.  Although I forget which ones he said looked better than others so sorry!  Maybe others might be able to chime in.
  • Yes, you can use your license anywhere in the PA county... i found it on the Montgo site:

And we're also doing it the same way like jelybeancg said:
Norristown - Montco marriage license is cheaper ($45) than Philadelphia ($80), so we're getting ours in Norristown, since we live in between both cities

  • It sounds like you are getting a lot of contrary advice. What I was taught in seminary school is that you must get a county license from the county where you are going to get married. The only exception to this is if you go to City Hall, in downtown Philly, and you can get a "self-marrying" license which is good for ANY county in the state. I have signed several of those latter licenses, and there were no problems with them.

The above person is incorrect. I got my license in one county and was married in another county without a problem.  Refer to the websitte tdmaus posted.
