have any of you used the Sharper Image Steam Cleaner from BBB? It uses distilled water and is supposed to clean just as well as the steam machine in the jewelers. Its $80....wonder if its worth it. For now, I'll stick to windex

I have the Sharper Image ultrasonic cleaner. Not so impressed.

One thing to keep in mind: steam cleaning only removes dirt and such, it does not polish. So if there are parts of your rings that aren't covered in stone, it won't make those parts shiny again. My wedding band is platinum (no stones) and my engagement ring is a center stone with baguettes (so most of the band is just platinum), and I have to get them polished rather than steam cleaned to make them look nice again.

And if it is just steam and distilled water, I'd bet you could use a normal clothes steamer if you have one instead of buying the jewelry one?

good points. I have a solitaire, so i really need polishing more then anything.

I had the ultrasonic cleaner, but i threw it out. I have 20 diamond points around the setting of my stone, and after cleaning one day 2 of the points fell out into the cleaner. I was convinced the vibration shook them out, and I tossed it. LOL

what about the jewelry cleaners you can by at a jewelry store or even target? It seems to make my ring sparkel more- you drop it in the solution for up to 30 seconds, brush it, rinse, and dry it. Is that almost as good as polishing? BTW- anyone know how often you can use a cleanser like this on a ring?

Honestly, I just will use a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean my ring. That's what our jeweler recommended and it always sparkles after. As uppereast mentions, a polish is needed also but I'm not sure how frequent...

I never heard of using windex..OR toothpaste! Really?!? I just take mine to the jewelry store when i go to the mall and have them do it haha.

OH..and can someone please tell me what S/O means? I keep seeing it but cant figure it out...TIA

be careful with toothpaste - it is abrasive and can scratch your ring! i use windex sometimes but most of the time, i drop it in the pink jewelry liquid cleaner stuff (from a jewelry store) for about 1 min, take it out rinse with water and it comes out super sparkly!

I use one of those little jars of jewelery cleaner. let it soak, use the brush to brush around the stones a bit, and then rinse. It sparkles pretty good after. Nothing like bringing it to the jeweler, but unfortunately I don't get to do that too often.

hmm..never heard of windex or toothpaste...I usually just use hot water and dish washing detergent and it leaves it sparkly! ;]

My jeweler told me that I am not to use anything other than hot water to clean my ring with. I always bring it to him, but its not like he charges me. Whenever I go there he makes me take off all my jeweler, not just the rings and cleans them for me. I am afraid to use anything else.

My SIL a former personal assistant to a well known jeweler says white toothpaste is great to use when you don't have anything else. I haven't tried it yet though.

I just use windex inbetween taking it to the jewelers. It was easier before when we were looking for bands and I would just ask them to clean it while we were there. Mine is a solitare so it's pretty easy to clean around the diamond. Sometimes I'll use the little spray can you use to clean your keyboard to spray through the setting. It helps a little after I soak in the windex.

Yeah, mine is very involved in the jewelry market. He's a wholesaler and that was the only suggestion he told me besides a professional cleaning. He said soap is abrasive but not toothpaste.
