Retrosexual: The New Metrosexual? Helloooo Don Draper!

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/lifestyles/fashion/s_682185.html

From the article:

The retrosexual keeps things simple. He does not own more hair and skin care products than his wife or girlfriend. He does not "accessorize."

Think Don Draper, the dapper, jut-jawed executive played by Jon Hamm in the AMC series "Mad Men." He may be a philanderer, but you won't find a pink shirt in his wardrobe. Like the dark hero characters of ex-spy Michael Westen in "Burn Notice" and U.S. Marshal Raylon Givens in "Justified," "Mad Men" presents alpha males who live unapologetically by their own code.

Draper embodies the same manly values outlined in Dave Besley's 2008 book, "The Retrosexual Manual: How to Be A Real Man" (Prion; $24.95). Draper deals with crises head on. He possesses resilience, a virtue that was the subject of a recent multipart dissertation on www.artofmanliness.com.

Soo, how do you like your man? Would your DH/SO/FI qualify as a retrosexual? Is he part of the menaissance?

I couldn't help but think of Nebb the whole time as I was reading the article!

If my husband would wear clothes that fit him and style himself properly I think he would look EXACTLY like don draper... but he doesnt. My husband is a bit of a slobby artist who doesnt like to spend money on clothes so they all have a worn in look. I like him that way though :)
  • Nebb-- My FI also hates spending money on clothes! He usually waits until his mom tells him he can't wear "those jeans" anymore and buys him a new pair.

I could care less what he wears, for the most part, unless we're going somewhere nice. He has a little bit of a preppy look to him, but, I think that comes with the all-American, blonde hair, blue eyes thing.

My husband has nice clothes but we never go nice places, so he normally just wears sleep pants and tshirts. If we go out he has a stache of nice polo shirts, nice button up shirts and nice slacks to wear if necessary. They are all in practically pristine condition because they rarely get worn :)

Mine's definitely all about the jeans, cruddy old t-shirts, and scruffy beard. Very much the opposite of Don Draper. He cleans up nice but most of the time he doesn't care. I'm fine with that.
  • mine falls into the golfer category: polos, shorts, jeans, slacks, button downs. mix and match as needed, and of course, wear shirts twice (ew) and jeans about 10 times before washing (also ew). there is no metrosexual or retrosexual or whatever. he just doesn't care.

  • I don't know what Scott would be. His wardrobe consists of dress pants/shirts from his old job, jeans, shorts, and about 50 white t-shirts. He does however have a ridiculous supply of hair products, colognes, etc and likes to keep himself looking nice.

H is not a slob, per se, but he really coud not care less about his appearance. I think he's hot but heaven forbid he realizes that and dresses accordingly.
    Leo says hi. He's...special.

DH is not an alpha male. I'm not attracted to that type of man. And he's definitely the one in the relationship more concerned about fashion. But men's fashion and the "rules," not women's fashion. He definitely has his own sense of style, and it's loud. He frequently shops here: http://www.duchamplondon.com/ He's not the chest wax/mani-pedi type though.

  • My FI has retrosexual potential, but is definitely not a retrosexual. He could really care less what he's wearing and is a bit more rugged I guess. I'm totally into the retrosexual thing though.

  • Scott is definitely the guy who won't spend money on looking good.  He actually wore his first pair of jeans since he was 8 yesterday!  His ass looked fiiiiiine.  And there is no way in hell he would have gotten those jeans if he didn't NEED them for Uganda, and I had to threaten to buy them for him.

    Undecided

He does occasionally let me pluck his unibrow, but there are no hair products to his name.
