Tipping?

Married ladies,

What vendors did you tip and what amount?  Did you go by a certain % of their overall fee or did you just use flat dollar amount.  I certainly know I need to tip but I am having a hard time determining which I am suppose to tip or not and how much.

Here is the guide I used when I was planning:
    http://wedding.theknot.com/wedding-planning/wedding-budget/articles/wedding-vendor-tipping-cheat-sheet.aspx

Since my service charge covered all gratuities at my venue, I only tippped: my MUA (20%), my DJ (10%/$150), and my ceremony musicians ($10 each).  The last 2 are the people and amounts my event planner suggested.

Thanks for asking this questions Bobbieleigh and for your answer Stephie, I was just thinking about tipping tonight.

My planner told me that I'm under no obligation to tip, and they shouldn't expect. She said to only tip the vendors you think go above and beyond what you expected. She said if you do tip, it's just whatever amount you feel would be acceptable.

I agree with Stephie. I didn't tip the Caterer because it was included.

And I didn't tip the DJ because he sucked it up hardcore. So, I only tipped my hair and MUA (two different people). I actually completely forgot to tip my MUA the day of my wedding, so I sent her a thank you card after the wedding with a tip included. oops.

Oh I forgot, my MIL did end up tipping the 2 women that helped with the reception (I don't know their titles) $50 each because they were so wonderful.  They also assisted with brunch the next day.

    I tipped hair (15%), makeup (15%), harpist (10%), and DJ (10%).

I too used that Knot article for a guideline and just adjusted as I saw fit.

I tipped hair and MUA 20% and I tipped Becky too for being such a sweetheart. My DJ was an independent business owner as was my photog, so everything I read said they didn't need to be tipped unless I felt the service was absolutely exceptional. The caterer included the tip in the price, so I didn't tip extra for them.

I used a tipping guideline from one of the bride magazines.  I tipped my hair/MUA, my DOC and my photographer.  I didn't have a DJ.

Did the planner say this about specific vendors or about just any vendor, including hair and makeup stylists? If it's the latter, I don't think this is the widely accepted view.

I only tipped my MUA and my hair person.  However, I did feed my DJ and my photographers.

I tipped our DJ, Photogs, hair stylist, reception venue owner to sweeten her up (so she would let us get away with things), caterer, florist and maybe BIL, who was our officiant.  I think I tipped Becky like $10, it wasn't a lot but she was very appreciative.

If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't give out the tips before the start or even in the middle of the night.  Instead I would hold on to the envelopes and towards the very end of the night I would adjust the amount to what we saw fit.

    I tipped Becky $10-15 I think..but my bill was only $75.

This has been helpful as far as how much, I am going to see Becky tonight to pick up my dress so that was good to know about how much you ladies typically did.  I just feel like I love all my vendors soo much (and hopefully still will after the wedding) that I want to tip them all except the ones that have already included it.  I am torn though because I feel like I am already spending an arm and a leg and I could easily spend another 500-600 on tips if I did this.

Also, one other question.  I was going to hire some additional help to set up things on the day of such as:

Chargers, napkins, menus, favors, candles, paper lanterns and some other random decor that I am bringing in that is not typically included in the venue fee.  My venue wonderfull offered to just have their extra staff their help set it up throughout the day if I would just tip them what I thought was fair.  My problem is I have NO idea what is fair.

Eek... they actually asked you to tip them?  Hello, awkward.   I would say, I dunno, $100?

As far as "who" they say anyone who is not in business for themselves (or gratuity is not already included) should be tipped.  I think the only exception really is hair and makeup because tipping is standard practice in their trade....and anyone who goes above and beyond what you hired them to do, maybe?

    Just my two cents. :-)

Yeah, they have PT help there Tues-Fri to help do office tours and that is who they are going to have help set stuff up.  It really isnt part of their job and the venue has no responsibility to do this, I was actually going to hire someone to come in and do it so in the end it should save me a chunk of money.

Yeah, if you hired a DOC for that think of how much you would pay that person.  Maybe 1/4 of that split among the workers?  Heck if I know....  We gave our people $50 each but they did more than just the decor, they helped serve, got us our plates, did the brunch the next day, etc.

I thought I remembered that someone once said Becky refused the amount they tried to give her as a tip, saying it was too much, so I shyly asked if she'd take an extra $20. (My total was $150). I probably could've offered a higher amount, now that I think of it, but I honestly worried she might refuse it if I did! Anyway, she seemed appreciative of the $20.
