Hotel Blocks

Are you blocking hotels for your guests? All of my guests will be OOT, so I've been looking into getting a room block but the prices I'm being quoted just don't seem competitive. I can go online and book the rooms cheaper (for the wedding date) than what I've been offered. I used hotelplanner.com and the NOLA visitor's bureau site - should I call and see if I can get better deals? How did blocking work for y'all?

I'm getting married in March the weekend after St Pattys (though the parades are the weekend before) so I'm not sure if something is driving up the prices.

EDIT: I'm getting offered $150-200 per night, whereas other brides' vendor review show $100-130 per night for similar hotels.

We blocked rooms at the Hilton RIverside.Jerome is the coordinator. He was really friendly and helpful (thats what my fiance said as he was in charge of room blocks). We stayed there for our engagement party and really liked it. Its pretty and big! ha! If there is a convention in town its really hard to get hotel rooms. I hopt this helps. Good luck.

I blocked mine at the Sheraton and the Marriott on Canal Street at $90 a night which I consider a good price. Both are very nice hotels.  You must be looking at the more
    shi-shi typical New Orleans Hotels.

Hmm, perhaps. I just submitted my info to the Visitor's bureau; I'm not seeking out specific hotels. I'll try the mentioned hotels. Thanks for the info ladies, very helpful!

We have room blocks at The Ambassador & The W New Orleans (the one on Poydras).  The Ambassador gave us rooms for $119 and The W at $149.  $149 for the W is awesome so I was very happy.

If it makes you feel better, I booked the Sheraton (who has been great btw) for my October wedding and the rooms are $169/night, originally $209. I thought I was getting a good deal until I noticed someone else say they got the rooms for $90/night. I have heard that my weekend in Oct. (the 23rd) is extremely busy for some reason. I think there is a medical convention in town. I didn't ahve luck scoring great deals either apparently, but I'm really happy with the suite at the Sheraton so I guess it's all worth it.

I looked at the Omni, they were $179 I think. Montelone was $219 I believe. Good luck!

Thanks ehevans - yeah guess it depends on the weekend. It seems to be higher across the board for all hotels that I'm seeing, so there may be a convention or something then. I will tell our guests to book early!

the $90 rate may be for the summer or hurricane season.  sounds really low for the sheraton and the marriott (not sure if its the marriott or jw marriott since both are on canal) i'm early december and had to fight for $169 at the Westin.

I got married the last weekend of March this year and we were able to block rooms at the Chateau Bourbon on Iberville/Canal/Bourbon for $99/night. I got this rate through the tourism bureau. I worked with Molly Hannen.

If you can't find a cheaper rate, I wouldn't stress about it. Hotel blocks are helpful, but people can always make their own arrangements. If there are cheaper options online, I would only block the number of rooms you are sure you can fill.

We blocked rooms off at Hotel Dauphine for $149/night, and also at the Holiday Inn-Chateua LeMoyne for $89 Wed-Thurs, and $129 Fri.-Sat., (we are getting married on a Friday). I filled out the RFP on the Convention and Visitors burea Web site and got a lot of affordable options offered.

I blocked at the Sheraton for $159/night.  I think it just depends on the time of year

Are you getting married March 26th?  That's the weekend of the Elite 8 NCAA basketball tournament that, as far as I can tell, is in New Orleans.  We ran into the same problem, but we went with it.  I booked at the Westin at $179 which is more than I wanted, but it had other positives that made it worth it.  It is right behind the Aquarium where we're getting married so it's worth it to me.
