out of state budget wedding & registering

Is it wrong to ask people for gift cards instead of actual gifts since  we have a  low budget & will be having the wedding ceremony in Wisconsin & we have to drive back to NY...  and as our dog will be coming with us, there will not be a lot of extra room.
we though we would put something in with the RSVP cards stating our preference in a nice way!

HELP! all and any input is greatly appreciated!

    Don't put anything about gifts in the invitation packet. 

    People will probably realize that gift cards, small gifts or mailing gifts to your home would be best since ou don't live in WI.  You parents and bridal party can spread the word that since you're driving and bringing the dog, gift cards or registry gifts mailed to your house would be best.

    Agee, you never "ask" for gifts and never put anything about gifts with invitations. People can send you gifts and so many people give cash gifts these days, there is no need to ask.

    i was jsut going to put a small slip of paper in that said somethign to the affect of ... "if you plan on getting us a gift, gift cards woudl be much more functional for us due to travel & space" after i have family that always asks for christmas gifts ect what they shoudl do....

    This is not appropriate. Again, nothing about gifts should be put with invitations. Word of mouth is the best way to handle this.

    At the weddings I've been to recently, very few guests have brought boxed gifts to the reception.  It depends on your crowd, but many people nowdays buy gifts online and have them shipped to the B&G.

    If you do receive more gifts than you can drive back with, you can always return them to a local store branch (if it's a national chain) and then use the store credit to buy the gifts back when you are in NY.
