under your ballgown

Hi ladies
i have a ballgown dress with 3 layers of tulle under it, and I am wearing a hoop skirt/slip thing.
I was thinking -Do I really need to wear spanx? It kind of comes away from my body so much that I think it won't make a difference. But I'm not sure, maybe it will protectfrom lumps and bumps when I sit?
My concern is neither my church NOR my venue has ac. Its on the water-but I know it might still be a sticky day in August...
I was thinking of getting a pair of boy short from hanky panky..
thoughts?

Here is my dress:

  • If you are doubting you need to wear spanx, then why wear them?

  • I didn't really NEED spanx under my dress, but I wore them anyway to prevent "chub rub" on my thighs. I was hot and it was 90 degrees on my wedding day, but I would much rather have a smoothe tummy and unchaffed legs than be uncomfortable and walking bowlegged all day. That was my only reason for wearing spanx.

  • Oh I didn't really think of the chub rub thing.

    thats a good point

  • Don't worry about rub. Put deodorant on your rub spots that morning.  No chub rub!  You can also use baby oil or the baby oil gel but that usually absorbs too quick and you won't be able to easily reapply.  Spanx are miserable.  I wouldn't wear them!
  • the spanx I have now don't even come down my legs. I'd hve to get the shorts. The ones I have are the high waisted brief. They are comfortable to wear under dresses for work and what not, but when I tired them on at my fitting w my dress I was Sweating sooo bad it was horrible.

I wear skirts and dresses a lot at work and dont ever get a rubbing- but i am pretty apple shaped so i carry my weight in my mid section and not really my legs.
I am usually up walking half the day and sitting half the day and dont get a ton of issues-- but I do use the deordorant trick.
    thanks forhte reminder :)

  • I probably wouldn't wear spanx if I was you. My dress is layered chiffon- super light but I was still warm just wearing it for my fitting. I'm going to do either deodorant or baby powder to prevent unwanted friction on my thighs.

  • when you go to your fitting, try your dress on with them and without them, and see what you like better.  Your dress is poofy at the bottom, but it's still fitted around the belly.  Spanx may help with any belly chub you may have.

  • Wearing spanx is totally a personal preference. No one has to wear spanx. They do because they think it helps. If you don't think you need it, then don't wear it.

sorry maybe i wasn't clear. I just meant, from experience- do people think it makes a difference in their ballgowns-- have things laid flatter, looked more flattering.not necessarily make the decision for me! whoops

  • Do you typically wear spanx and have a broken-in pair that your comfortable wearing? I think a wedding day would not be a good time to try out something new, because if you hate it you will just be miserable all night.

I honestly wouldn't recomend it for under your dress. There are so many layers that, at least on my dress, it didn't make a difference. I would, however, recomend a long-line bra, which would smooth out anything from your chest down to your tummy, plus it helps your posture.

  • thakns so much! Glad to know you didn't think it made a difference
I'm actually skipping the long line- the dress is structured with so much boning and it has liek 3 "bra straps" plus wired cups so when I tired it on with a long line bra..I looked like madonna! or dolly parton!

  • My first plan was to wear spanx, but after my first fitting, i realized "how would i get them off if i had to pee?" LOL. My dress is a corset and when I snug all the way in it, I can't even put my own shoes on lol...no spanx
  • I just wanted to say I think your dress is BEAUTIFUL!!!
  • thanks so much! I decided to go with a comfy cotton boy short!!
It is so much more beathable

Thanks ellie! I appreciate it! I ended up having spghetti straps added and it gives it a bit more of a casual vibe- which i orignally didint want but the dress is really dressy otherwise and i['m not having a huge ballroom wedding.
Plus the straps made the dress WAY more comfortable!
