Gah, s/o disciplining

H gets mad when I swat my dog.  I can't imagine what he will think when I go to swat a child with diapers on.

I'm talking a toddler not an infant here.

We grew up with spankings, so I'm familiar that it didn't permanently damage me.

It's your opinion.  I sometimes have to grab my pups to get their attention when they're focused on something.

I can understand not being able to grab a dog under 20 lbs, but my 70 lb pups sometimes don't get the gesturing and pointed yelling.

Y'all know I'm not a huge pet person, but I don't like to see people hit dogs either. I think the only time would be if they were biting someone or they were acting like cujo or something.

Ok. I don't think even hitting Cujo would have helped. Man, I loved that movie.

don't other dogs discipline other dogs?  isn't that what the biting and niping is all about?

discalimer: i am not a dog or dog owner.

Oface - I agree with you. The dogs will get a swat once in a while if they do something very bad - or I'll flip them over on their backs with my hand around their snout.  (i.e. I'm dominant, and therefore the boss.)

I've had to do the same with ILs' husky mix a few times - she will paw/nip/jump at people. She won't come at me now, because she realized that I'm not going to let her get away with it like MIL would.

My dogs think a swat with a magazine is "omg throw it throw it throw it, wantto bite teh magazine".

I in no way condemn violence on animals, no closed fisting punches or wailing here.

Just a directive yell and swat.

But sometimes H is all "that was mean".  Um, the dogs weren't listening and yelling louder is not an option.
