Snarky Brides

I just wanted to say..

Thank you!
I was lurking the post about cliche knot advice you hate and I was so happy to read what some of you were saying, especially when you said that picking one dress for your bridesmaids to wear doesn't make you a bridezilla!
It seems like brides get some saint award on the other boards for letting their bridesmaids choose a dress and brides who choose a dress for their girls get the side eye.
I chose a dress, with help from my bridesmaids, that they all love and no one is upset about it.
Also, thank you for saying you disagree with the whole "all a bridesmaid is responsible for is buying the dress and showing up on time." If my bridesmaids were to do that I would feel like they didn't even want to be in my wedding. It's not like I'm shoving to do lists in their faces, but they have graciously offered their assistance and enthusiasm to planning my wedding and I am really grateful for that.
So yeah, just wanted to say I appreciate what you ladies said!

  • Hi! How do you like Portland? I've always wanted to go there.

  • I'm intrigued by the West Coast, for real.
  • OP! Come back and play :)

I also had matching dresses, and I'm sorry... but I think all of the pictures just look better because of it.  I've got nothing against allowing BMs to choose their own dresses, but I love the cohesiveness of being in the same dress.

Anyway. Come back and show us the dress you picked out! Tell us about your wedding :)

</div><div>Hello, and I like you already. I let BM & MOH choose dresses in a given color group, but I DID have to like the dresses, and they were cool with that. I could have hauled off and chosen them, too and I would have done it without apology. I sucked it up on more then one occasion and wore some, er interesting dresses and was glad to do it.</div><div>
</div><div>Also the "pay for the dress and show up on time" thing is bull, I agree. I am not saying they owe you free labor, but if they are not at least nice and interested in the wedding, WTF did they say "yes" to being in it for? I see this this "Bride Bad-Bridal Party Innocent" go on knee jerk style on some of the boards and it is annoying as hell.

  • Well you sound like you have a level head on your shoulders :)

I just think it's all about being logical and kind to your wedding party and keeping your sanity. There are times when it's best/easiest for everyone to have the same dress, and times when it's best/easiest to have different dresses.

I don't think anyone is saying it's bad for BM's to be excited about your wedding or want to help, it's the people who expect it. You would not believe the amount of posts where someone is bitching because their BM refused to fly out to where the bride was once a month for 5 months to help the bride with wedding stuff. That's when the "they just need to show up" line gets pulled out.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: I just wanted to say.. : I agree. I love that picture.  My girls all picked out their own dresses and it's<strong> one of my small wedding regrets</strong> but at the time I didn't want to deal with the drama of the girls complaining about the dresses.

I don't know why.  Your BMs looked great.  I love the orange and orange print.  And the pajamas...that's cute!

Aw thanks. The pajamas were fun!
  • I agree.  My BMs had matching dresses and I think it made pictures look better.  If I couldn't find a dress that looked good on everyone, I would have let them pick their own dresses in a specified color.  I made sure to ask my BMs for their thoughts on dresses and they all liked the same one so it worked out great.

One of my BMs lives far away so it wasn't easy for her to come to my shower or bachelorette party.  Of course I wish she could have come but I understand that she can't just spend money to buy a plane ticket just to come to a one day pre wedding event.  She always asked about wedding plans and even if she couldn't come to certain events, I knew that she cared and was interested in my wedding.

  • I like the cohesive look as well and so does FI. The dresses are these from DB in Guava:

One of the girls liked the dress so much (especially when she found out it had pockets) that she just stood around grinning and said that she just might have to wear it every weekend during the summer. I said that was fine as long as she doesn't show up to the wedding with bbq stains down the front of the dress lol

and this is my dress (this is the tell you about my wedding part):
    http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Lace-Cap-sleeve-Trumpet-with-Keyhole-Back-and-Sash-VW9768_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns

We're getting married in a gazebo and having a garden party wedding with around 300 guests. My mom has been a HUGE help-she's taking care of food (light lunch) and flowers (lots of bright colors and big blooms) as well as helping with centerpieces. I swear she is superwoman.

FI and I are light hearted and young and like to have fun, so we're reflecting that by having paper tablecloths ala Macaroni Grill at the reception, with Crayola crayons (cause I was president of the Coloring Club at my university) and custom Mad Libs.

I am looking forward to having fun at our wedding :)

And, for those who asked about Portland-it is an AMAZING city! There is such an emphasis placed on enjoying the outdoors. FI proposed in the city's International Rose Test Garden, which is spectacular and really warrants a visit in the month of June, when thousands of roses are blooming.

Portland has lots of really fun restaurants and shops, especially on NW 23rd Ave, a really hip district-that street alone contains my favorite Thai place (typhoon), my favorite coffee and crepe shop (vivace) and an adorable stationery shop, as well as a candy shop where the owner makes his own lollipops to sell (the grape ones smell the best when being made).

I love Portland, though I actually live a few miles north in Vancouver, Washington, which is also a great city-we are home of the Girlfriends Half Marathon-which offers wine and chocolate and massages to the all female runners who participate!

  • i'd be happy to wear that bm dress. my friend just got engaged and told me last night she is thinking about zebra print dresses. i'm hoping i'm not asked to be a bm in that one!

  • Zebra print sounds...interesting to say the least! Could be cool though.

You know, I am not sure if it is-I am horrible with navigation! It's pretty close to it. I will have to check out Beast.

Thanks :) The colors are chocolate brown, guava, a light green and cream, with some bits of tangerine and pink thrown in on flowers.
