Name change/License

Have any of you had any trouble with applying for/getting your new (working) license in a new state?  I know how long my FI will be in his current location, but then I'm not sure how long he will be in the next state for training.  I'll be moving with him after our wedding in September, so I guess I'm just wondering if any of you have had to do this process with your new locations.

Also, our wedding is about a month before I take my national exam, so I'm worried that my paperwork won't all be through to get the test in my married name.  I'm not sure how or if it will affect my license, but I know these specific questions will be better answered by my professors.

Re: Name change/License

  • You should be able to keep your drivers license from your current state, especially if you want to maintain residency (look into where the state income taxes are better, or where you'd prefer to vote).

I'm worried because I have heard I have to appear in person to change my license, and I'm maintaining Florida residency, but I won't be living in Florida anymore so I hope I can just drive down to Jacksonville rather than go back to Miami-Dade.  I have no desire to come back to Miami for even a few days!  Ever!

  • I feel terrible that you've been so unhappy living there.  :(  I'm glad you'll be able to move soon though!  Will you just keep Florida until you guys are at a base?  FI has family in Davie..I think that's close to Miami, right?  It's close to Ft. Lauderdale.

Do you know of anyone that has to have a state specific license for their profession?  For PT, it's a national licensing exam, but then you must obtain a state license in order to practice.  I know the chance of us ending up in Texas in slim, but I don't want to spend the time and money to get a FL PT license if we aren't going to be there for a bit.
  • I'm a teacher, and switched my teacher certification from NY to WA when we moved here.  Now I'm kinda mad that I even bothered since we were only here a year and a half, and I never got a teaching job (or put much effort into finding them.

I applied for my WA certification before we were married so it will still in my maiden name.  When I switch to VA certification I will do it in my maiden name.  Usually on applications there is a slot for maiden name, or the name on your certification.  If anything I will submit a copy of my marriage license that says my maiden name and married name.

  • I'd call and ask the licensing board.  I'm sure you're not the only one who's gone through this!!!  Also, call and ask the licensing boards of California, Hawaii, North/South Carolina, Virginia, etc - all the places with big USMC bases as it's most likely you guys will be stationed in one of those.

ESalaam, I'm keeping Florida residency as long as FI is in the military.  We pay no state income taxes here, so it's to our advantage.  Also, I can get Florida Resident discounts to the theme parks, and that's always awesome.  So I'll have to figure out if I can get a new license in Jacksonville, or if I have to make a special trip back to Miami.  Gah.

  • Fire, how do you plan to "switch" your residency?  My understanding was that it was pretty tough to do, unless you own property down in Florida or live there.  Do you have family there or something?  It's definitely a great thing, if you can get it.  There's a few other states that have no state income tax, too.
