August 2012 Weddings

Lets talk HONEYMOONS.....

Where are you ladies going and when?  I am getting overwhelmed with all the options.  I wanted to do P*nta Cana but someone said that is Hurricane season.  We are looking at leaving on Sept 3 thru the Sept 9.  Cancun is an option as well.  I don't want to do anything in the states but I'm just not sure which location to choose. HELP....what ideas do you ladies have?

Re: Lets talk HONEYMOONS.....

  • My parents are looking at buying a condo in Hawaii and their looking at places in about 2 weeks. If they decide to get it when their down their we will definitely be heading to hawaii, Free lodging? HECK YEAH! haha

  • We're in the same boat hvc!  Grandpa's time share in Maui.  We've never been to Hawaii so we're so stoked!

OP, I've heard Mexica is a good value but I've never been.  I went on a cruise last summer to a lot of different places in the Carribbean, and St. Thomas was def our favorite.  Bermuda's runner up.  BUT since it was a cruise, I'm not sure how pricey it is to stay in those places.

My friend who is getting married in Oct is only looking at Western Carribbean I think due to the hurricane issue.  If you decide to go somewhere where it is hurricane season, def. purchase travel insurance.

  • I think we're just going to take a couple days in Santa Barbara.  Since we'll already have to take a bunch of time off to fly to California for the wedding, it makes sense to put off a "real" one until later.

I need to officially book soon though, just to get that check out of the way!

  • We're doing a cruise to Bermuda.  We got insurance through American Express who are allowing us to reschedule if a hurricane hits.

  • We have to travel to Indiana for the wedding anyway, so similar to a PP, we will just be staying in the area our wedding will be. We'll probably stay at a hotel for a few nights in Indianapolis, then go to my parents lake house for a couple of days before driving back. I'm flying there, but FI is driving, so we'll drive back. We'll have stuff to bring back since we're having a second reception out here a month later.

We'd like to take a cruise to Bermuda on down the road. I'm thinking either for our first anniversary if we're not pregnant/with baby yet lol or when our first child is a couple of years old and can stay with family.

I'd LOVE to be able to fly off to some place exotic right after our wedding, but it's just not feasible...we contemplated it for a while. :(

  • Ideally, we have always talked of being able to go to Europe (he thinks Italy/France/Amsterdam would be awesome).  Realistically we are trying to decide if we want to wait and have a honeymoon later, or do something cheaper as that doesn't really fit in our budget right now.

  • A few friends of mine either were married or honeymooned in Hawaii and they enjoyed it.  Maybe I need to look into this....thanks Ladies.

  • We're going to Paris and Berlin, leaving the Monday after the wedding. I'm so excited to book it in the next couple weeks!!!

  • My honeymoon is going to be a complete surprise for me. My FI has planned it and booked it and won't tell me where we are going until the morning we leave!

But as for hurricane season, I am sure you will be fine. Go wherever you want to go and then just make sure to purchase insurance and then you will be fine. :)
  • I think we are just staying around where we are (our wedding is in a beach town) for the week after the wedding. We are thinking of renting a boat for a day r two etc.

then we are planning a "real" honeymoon probably for November or for February to go to greece

  • We are going to Aruba Aug 13-21.  We made sure to get the insurance incase anything happens though.  Hawaii is always a good choice...so beautiful

We might not get a honeymoon right after the wedding due to FI having to request military leave and such, but at some point in the fall we'll be going to Oregon & Washington to go wine tasting/beer tasting, hiking, go up in a hot air balloon, and stay in cute little B&Bs.

  • We're going on a Caribbean Cruise, leaving Sept 3 from New York. Wedding is Aug 31 in eastern PA.

Don't worry about it being hurricane season, just make sure you have insurance.

In PA this past August-October, we got hit with a major snowstorm, 2 hurricanes and an earthquake... and none of that was normal. If you let the weather plan for you, you won't be able to go anywhere in the Caribbean.

Although if you are worried, Aruba is outside the hurricane belt.

YAY!!!! That is my wedding date too.  And we are also looking to leave for the Honeymoon on the 3rd.
  • We are going to Aruba. It's much more affordable than I expected and like PP said it is below the hurricane season.
  • We are going to Spain, Portugal & Morocco, leaving the Monday after the wedding for 2 weeks.  It is somewhere neither of us have been.  We're actually not booking the trip until it gets a bit closer since flight prices typically come down once it's a bit closer.

  • We haven't booked yet, but we are thinking about Domincan Republic or Aruba.  Aruba is out of the hurricane belt, but there are still no guarantees, so we are just going to make sure we have travel insurance wherever we go!
  • We get married on August 3rd but are doing the honeymoon August 31st-September 8th - Yellowstone & The Tetons.

  • Aruba is wonderful, that's where we got engaged. We are returning for our honeymoon of course Cool

As far as Aruba vs. hurricanes -- in the entire history the island has existed the closest a hurricane has ever gotten to the island was 70 miles away. The island itself is outside of the belt so there is hardly any chance at all you will even hear about a hurricane while visiting.
  • My FI's family has a house in the Adirondacks and we're thinking of just going there for a week after the wedding.  We're pretty broke and can't afford to leave the country so renting a car and exploring that area is going to probably be it. We'll go to Lake Geoge and go hiking and have some fires outdoors and there's no TV or internet and he's gone up there regularly since he was a kid and I've only been twice for a weekend so it would be fun to just experience that with him. Plus, we can bring our cats (they were with us the last time we went!)

  • We're debating between Dominican Republic and Cabo San Lucas.
  • St. Lucia for us!  August 20-28 :)  We wanted all inclusive and this seemed like the most romantic / adventurous island when it came to excursions!

  • We are getting married on the 18th, and leaving for P*nta Cana on the 20th. We decided on the Secrets resort there since it's all inclusive, and adults only.  Just be sure you purchase the trip insurance, and you will be covered if there is a hurricaine.

  • So many exotic locations!

We're going to Anaheim, California. We're from Oregon and my Gma has a timeshare. She offered us any resort (that is included in the share) around the world but we decided we wanted something semi-close to home. Plus, we don't want to buy passports or expensive flights. We were originally going to travel by Amtrak but recently decided to fly. (Carry on only, baby!)

We'll be spending a day at CA Adventures Park and possibly going to the San Diego Zoo! We're truly kids at heart. Plus, we'll only be 21 on our honeymoon. =D

  • My brother works for the Hilton company, so he is going to get us a discount on a room at one of the Hilton's in Hawaii!!  We just have to decide when we want to go!!  We had both agreed we would stay in the US (No passports or fear of food poisoning that way)!!

My sister honeymooned in Jamaica, my brother and SIL in Mexico, both said they were beautiful!!!

My FFIL has gone to Bahamas, Mexico, and Hawaii and said if he could pick one to go to again it would be Hawaii!! :)

  • We are going to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. It doesn't seem to be the "Honeymoon Catipal of the World" anymore but it is perfect for us! We got engaged at Hectors Falls in NY, so why not follow it up with the big one at Niagara Falls!
