UPS and packages from the states

Hey ladies,

So I had some packages come from the states throught UPS because at the time I didn't know how long the strike was going to be. anyway I received a couple of them and I have to pay $100. One of them was worth around $70 and the other was $100.

Is this normal. I ordered these wedding stuff from Etsy and I have never paid this kind of amount. I just received a box of pew bows and they came through canada post and I didn't have to pay extra for them.

I would not have ordered them if I knew it was going to cost me more money...

When I order photo books from My Publisher, sometimes I get charged with duty at the border, and sometimes I don't, but it's not usually more than $10.  It depends on how big the packages are, and how much they are worth I believe.

Regular customs fees are 13% tax + a $5 handling fee through canada post, and they usually only apply this on items that cost more than $40 or so, but I think UPS charges more, for fun.

Ouch! I've sometimes been charged brokerage fees on stuff shipped via UPS, which is separate from customs. Here's a link I found regarding brokerage and bond fees though I can't really see anything that would indicate why you were charged quite that much...

I have no clue either. I have received packages from places other than the states  but it came through canada post and I did not get any extra charge. I paid them anyway...I don't want to have to send them back and worrying that i won't get them in time for the wedding...arggh unexpected expense I don't need.

I don't order much through UPS from the US but my brother does and he gets those brokerage fees all the time, they can be astronomical.  It's separate from the customs/duty charge.

that seems really high.  I ordered all the invites, programs etc through the US and had them fed-ex'd for speed.  I only paid $17 extra.

I've only ordered a handful of things from the US... if the item is under $40 I don't get charged customs (I find anyway, not sure if that is a rule) but I ordered my wedding shoes which were $64 and I paid $13 in duty on them.... the $100 seems a bit steep to be honest.

I run a business in the US, and live in Canada, so getting things shipped over the border is a frequent occurance...
The brokerage fees and duty fees girls have been talking about are normal BUT in all my experience I've never seen them come out that high... that seems a little crazy to me

I order from ebay and never had to pay those and my sellers ship from all over the world I think it depends on what the seller puts on your package if they put gift and a lower amount u wont get hit with so much but if they put commercial good or sale n actual price be prepared to pay duty on them depending on the item
