New to the Board... Hola!

Hi everybody! I've been lurking (while I was finishing school) but now that I've graduated I'm ready to get down and dirty with wedding planning =) First I'd like to say thank you all for having such an awesomely informative and supportive board. I'm always excited to read your posts.

My name is Christina, FI and I are planning a wedding in Puerto Rico next summer. I have family there which makes it more affordable for my local family to travel and stay. FI is Asian-American (hence the name Chan) and we're excited to bring a little bit of both cultures into our celebration.

We have a tentative date but no set venue. I have a general vision but nothing set in stone. I'm always up for suggestions and advice and always willing to share info and help anyone else if I can.

I look forward to chatting with you all =) Thanks for taking the time to read!

Congrats and welcome to the board! This board has the most awesome ladies on it that I ever met! They are all helpful and very knowledgeable. When do you plan to get married? I've never been to PR but I'm sure it will be amazing! Good luck with your planning!!

  • Welcome and congrats on the engagement and graduation. As Jenn said we have a good group of ladies here. I don't have much advice about puerto Rico since I have only been there once on a cruise. I can tell you that you shouldnt ask any destination wedding questions on the Ettiquite board. They can be awful.

  • Congrats and Welcome!!!  I'm not much help with PR...  My family is from there and it's absolutely BEAUTIFUL and it was my 1st choice in wedding location, but I didn't do much research.  The only reason I didn't end up not going with PR because I wanted all-inclusive and PR doesn't offer much in all-inclusive resorts. Otherwise it's the perfect place to get married!

I can't wait to hear about your plans!!!

  • Welcome!! What part of PR is your family from? Like Jen, I would have loved to get married there, but I really wanted the All Inclusive option because I feel like it is more cost-friendly (my family likes to eat and drink!!).

FIs company was "giving away" a trip to El Conquistador in San Juan (a Waldorf Astoria Resort). We saw a lot of promotional pictures for it, and it looks absolutely gorgeous!!!

Not sure if you are a fan of Bacardi, but they also host private events there as well!

I would stay away from Culebra Island. We took an overnight trip there once and we were all miserable. As soon as we got there, a ton of mosquitos attacked us, and they were HUGE!

    Hope some of this helps!

  • Hi Ladies! Thanks for the warm welcome, well wishes, and congrats!

My family lives by San Lorenzo, PR. They live high in the mountains. Super rural area. One landline phone for four houses, pick up your mail in another city, get your water from a well, chickens in the house, rural. LOL

FI and I are planning to find a venue in the mountains or close to the rainforest. We live on the mainland side of a bridge to the beach, so the beach is rather old news for us :-/ The mountains and rainforest however still awe us :)

We picked PR because it was the only mountainous/rainforest region my Florida family could really afford to travel to and it was important for us to bring them. Any where else would have required them to book hotels, rent cars, and buy food every day. (They won't have to do any of that in PR). The family is almost as excited as we are!

I have no problem keeping you all posted on the planning... I feel like I could talk wedding for days!

Thanks again! I look forward to chatting!
  • Nicole, thank you for the venue info!
Finding the venue has been one of the toughest things so far.

El Conquistador is gorgeous but it's on the beach and out of our measly little budget :(

FI thinks the Bacardi factory idea is pretty cool... I will definitely check into it :)

Good advice about Culebra. We didn't consider it because we thought it was a little much to ask people to fly to an island and then take a ferry to another island but we definitely won't consider it if we're going to get eaten alive by mosquitoes! Yuck! We can do that just fine in Florida LOL Who wants to smell like Off on their wedding day? I guess I could repurpose the tulle from my gown as a mosquito net! Baahahaha Can you imagine?

Thanks for warning me about Culebra. I have never been there. Much appreciated.
  • Welcome!!! I'm a cruise bride, but our ship is leaving from PR so I'm excited to go down there an spend a few days before we leave!! Can't wait to hear about your planning!
  • Congrats and welcome to the board! The women here are amazing and the most supportive group of women I've ever met, I LOVE that I've had them all come into my life during this planning process! Feel free to ask anything, share anything and get involved on here, you won't regret it!
  • Congratulations on your engagement! I was a DR bridge travelled from NYC and you are going to have a blast with your destination wedding! It is so much easier having family in the destination wedding location so they can help scope out and receive packages/mail. My friend who went to our wedding was set on her destination wedding after attending ours and now she has her dream coming true and we're going to Barbados lol. She has family there too so it's easier for her to plan. DW weddings are so much fun! Welcome and enjoy the board and these wonderful group of ladies! Don't be surprised when you end up doing more DIY things that you had planned initially!
