Lighting?

Hello all!  I'm a bit new to the boards and have planning mode in full swing!  I'm starting to do some research on lighting for our event - but was wondering if anyone used their DJ for lighting?  Here is what I am looking for;  our venue is being held in a photographer's studio (Artis Event Space) in KC and in the room is this HUGE white wall where he takes many of his shots.  So, to break up so much of the "white" I want to have a gel in one of the lights above (in a monogram of some sort) shining on the wall.  Has anyone does this?  Or thought of it before?

Re: Lighting?

  • Hi!  Welcome to the board!

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by a 'gel'?  The monogram or design that projects on the wall/floor is usually created by a metal plate that's attached in front of a  light.  It's called a gobo.  Typically you need to use a lighting company to make ithe metal plate for you and set it up.  The lights get failrly hot and I'm not sure if a 'gel' would work?  A lighting company can also can use uplighting to break up the room and incorporate your colors.  DJ's can sometimes provide uplighting as well but it just depends on the DJ.

Sounds like you have a great space to make your own!!
  • Hell!.  Just yesterday I checked out Premier Midwest DJ based on a recomendation from this board and saw that they also offer lighting and the above mentioned gobo designs for personalized messages or monograms.
  • Thank you for the terminology!  Back in HS (yes, it was about 10 years or so ago..so it's been awhile! Ha!) we used "gels" to put in front of (or attached somehow) the stage lighting (different colored sheets of seriously thick plastic that won't melt or be destroyed) and we all called them "gels" - I kind of assumed that what I was trying to say was not really the right terminology!  Thank you for your help ladies!!
  • I do know we checked into Platinum Production. They had all the lighting and could do some pretty crazy things. Just a little out of our current budget. But maybe they can give you a little info
