Getting in Shape

I don't have any to lose anymore but I can help you

Hi everyone!
I am new and jumping right in on the boards. I am so grateful that I don't have any weight to lose for my wedding because I am in the best shape of my life, but I do know some great tips for those of you who do want to lose weight! I used to weight about 20 pounds more than I do now and I lost it with good diet and exercise, so I will definitely be around the board offering any expertise I can. Hopefully I don't pile the pounds back on while I start planning!

Lol.

Re: I don't have any to lose anymore but I can help you

  • Don't keep me in suspense - what are your tips? I'm looking to lose at least 20 lbs. by the beginning of November. My wedding is the weekend before Christmas and I want my gown to fit perfectly.
  • yes...what are your tips?
  • Sorry I got tied up defending myself in the SB board. Don't worry, they love me :)

    So here are my tips:

Join a gym and go 5 times a week
Join WW and follow the flex plan
Do not drink alcohol except for very special occasions like I did when I had champagne on my enagement night
    Weigh yourself every other day

That should do it!  Did it for me!!

I would advise against this as would a lot of other people, in my experience.  Chose a day of the week and weigh yourself consistently on that day at the same time and in the same conditions.  i.e. I weigh myself on Friday mornings as soon as I wake up before I've eaten or drank anything.  If you are constantly weighing yourself, you're putting a lot of focus on that number on the scale.  It's a good way to track your progress, but not the only thing as your body can change shape and form without your weight fluctuating.  Also, your weight will vary significantly (3-5 lbs for me) and you may get discouraged by the number.

So, if I go to the gym 5 days a week and sit in the sauna for 20 minutes, I'll lose weight?

Everyone is different.  I'm having huge success losing body fat only going to the gym 2-3 times a week.  I'm lifting heavy weights and allowing my body sufficient time to repair.

You just have to GO to the gym. I go to the gym 14 times a week. I drive my car to the gym parking lot, walk out of my car and walk to the door like I'm touching home base. Then I go back to my car and drive home. Repeat every 12 hours. The walk through the parking lot really tones my glutes!

I should try this too, but I go to the gym - I have a personal training session once a week, and i do cardio 3 times a week, and lift weights to tone down the fat, and build some (a very little bit) of muscle.

The other side to this is what you eat, get to a nutritionist to talk to you about portion control.  the daily plate dot  com helps you with that, but if you honestly want to lose weight, you have to put yourself against an honest ruling system.  You can not cheat!

Yeah...based on your other posts, it's hard for me to believe you're not a troll or an AE.  I know sometimes people are quick to yell, "TROLL!" but really...you're not doing a good job of convincing anyone otherwise.

  • is this person for real?  anyway..........
  • You aren't even supposed to weight yourself very often. You're supposed to pay attention to inches not pounds. You gain muscle when you work out which is heavier than fat. Most people quit working out because they get frustrated when they see they are gaining "weight".
  • My bridal party has recently joined ww.... We can eat whatever we want as long as we stay within the points... This Thursday will be our 4th weigh-in.... It is the natural way to lose weight... We each have lost an average of 8 pounds in the past 3 weeks... Hopefully it keeps up!

As for the gym it's a no go... Instead I just walk my dogs almost everyday for about 30minutes... We all know a dogs pace while they are walking b/c they have to smell every tree....

We all have had luck so far.... As I said though, it has only been 3 weeks.... Hopefully it is not all water weight and is really working!!!!  Goodluck everyone...

Holy overuse of ellipses batman.... (ha, see what I did there?)

While I agree with the whole concept of weight watches in that it's really great about teaching people life skills, and how to manage portions and keep an eye those things, I do not agree, at all, with the "We can eat whatever we want as long as we stay within the points" mentality.

I've been there, I know.  I used to think that "Hey, look, 100 cal pack of chips, I'll eat that, it's in my calories" and then feel sluggish and crappy.  Our bodies are machines and need to be fueled.  If you put garbage in your car, it won't fun properly, but put in some proper octane, clean fuel and it'll run like a dream.  Your body is the same way.  You need to balance out what you eat.  Our bodies need good fats, and good carbs and protein to function to the best of our ability.

Again, I think WW is a great plan, and teaches people good things, I just wish there was more emphasis on the quality of things, rather than just the quantity.

I agree with this! WHen I started working out I actually gained 8 pounds because of muscles. HOWEVER, I was the skinniest and most toned in my life. 5 years ago I was run-over by a cab and haven't been to the gym in 4 years. Just started about a year ago after settling my claim and the fat I did gain (oh so much of it! hee hee) I'm losing now but again I'm not seeing much of a weight loss since with the cardio, I'm actively lifting weights with my FI. Love lifting weights since you burn more calories in those areas your focusing on. I really don't pay attention to the scale but my tape measure. If I fit in my skinny jeans again and still way more than I did way back in the day then that's all that matters!

I have friends that do WW and many are successful. They also do Yoga and I do Tae Bo at home lol. That workout literally kicks my own butt.
  • Weightloss is different for everybody.  We all have different goals.  Its pretty much a mathematical equation.  We must burn more calories than we take in to lose weight. However, There is no simple formula that takes into account body composition, ethnicity, the thermic affect of nutrients, body surface area, etc etc
In my opinion, a good rule of thumb is this: If you would like to maintain your weight, ex 120lbs, then you could probably safely eat 1200 calories (10 calories per lb)plus another 300 for daily activities. That's with little to no exercise. If you are trying to lose weight cut out the extra calories you add in for daily activities plus get busy doing whatever it is you love to do. walk run sports garden etc to burn even more calories. 3500 calories equals a pound. if you want to lose a pound a week cut out or burn an extra 500 calories a day. I have been in the fitness industry for 8 years. You can workout as much as you want  but if youre not eating properly for your body weight then you won't be nearly as successful reaching you weightloss goals!
Sorry for the novel! This is my business and I'm  passionate about it! I'd love to help as many people( brides) as possible.  :)

  • I agree with everything Natalie just said.  I lost weight before my wedding and I wish I knew then what I know now about healthier ways to lose weight.  But like she said everyone is different.  What works for me might not necessarily work for you and vice versa.  I think she meant well and she just wanted to encourage other people that it can be done like I do!  I want people to know that it can be done and I want them to get healthy at the same time.

People who eat whatever they want on WW are doing it wrong.  I know in my meetings there is an emphasis on getting people to eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, lean protein, and good fat.  You are supposed to follow the good health guidelines every day.  Yeah, there are days that you might go out for a meal and splurge.  Or maybe have a glass of wine or two.  That's fine because that's life.  If people are going to McDonald's regularly, but staying within their points, they're doing it wrong.
