F/U to FI health issues

Hey girls, I have the internet for awhile and need some sanity, so I thought I'd post quick and give you a quick update, if anyone wants to know...then I'm going to go scour the boards for what I've missed.

FI (J) is still locked up tight in his (un)comfy little room...no chest tube still, and I'm alternating between this is good and this is bad. He's having a real difficult time breathing, but the lung hasn't done anything warrenting putting the tube in yet. The on-call doctor this morning wanted to release J around 11am because the lung wasn't doing anything, and it would be "better for him to go home and just let it collapse and hope he makes it back here in time". Yes, he said that. I was less than pleased....he got an earful, to say the least.

J is sleeping now, finally - he's been getting rough patches of sleep here and there, but it's hard when he's being poked and prodded every hour. He wanted to say thank you for all the wellwishes and for keeping me sane and giving me something to do, other than brainstorming how to maim the unhelpful doctors.

Hope your nights are going well - a lot has happened on the board since I was last here....did it explode or something? Anyway, tell me about your day - hump days are usually the best!!

I might have missed something but what caused this to start happening with him? I cant believe the doctor would say that!! How insensitive. I hope he gets better soon!
  • Kudos to you for not punching the dr. in the junk.

  • Fish - I was here this morning and sometime between 9/10 when i logged out and now, the board exploded! As for J, his R lung is on the verge of collapsing - the L one did twice and is stapled to keep it from happening again, and the R has once and is trying to do it again. They can't staple til it happens, but they can't intubate and help him breathe til it actually collapses, instead of just partially collapsing.

Nebb - spontaneous lung collapses (they have a big name that I can't spell). It doesn't run in his family and he's the only one it's ever happened too, so we don't know what's causing it or how to prevent it. :( That doctor will not be darkening our doorway again, though....I was really angry.

Oh god that is scary, is this just a recent thing?
  • Apparently, absolutely nothing. Like I said, staple it once it collapses and hope it holds (the L one has been holding out for 5 years now, which is better than expected) but other than that...a lot of prayers, basically. =[

  • Since 2003/4....it ended his basketball career (had a scholarship for Miami U) and basically makes us play the waiting game. He's scared to have kids because he doesn't want to pass it on to them. It's horrible

  • Is pneumothorax the word you're looking for? It's more common in males, particularly tall, thin ones who smoke. And once you've had one you're more likely to have another. It's insanely scary, but virtually everyone recovers from them. They probably don't want to insert chest tubes yet because of the risk of damaging the lung even more.I can't believe the doctor was such a jerk!

Well, actually, doctors are jerks quite often... I hope he learned his lesson though.

  • that's it, cac! he doesn't smoke, but the tall and rail thin part is right!

i think the doc learned his lesson....he seemed pretty frightened of me when he left.

[QUOTE]I have actually had this happen to me (the spontaneous pneumothorax). It sucks A LOT, and is very very scary, but typically isn't life threatening in any way. Basically, a tiny bubble forms on the lung, which eventually bursts, creating a hole in the lung- which causes the lung to collapse. But, yea, as PP said, it happens to people who are tall and thin. I fell into an even smaller percentage because I am female and a non-smoker. No one else in my family has had this either. And, if it happens once, it is extremely likely to happen again. Luckily for me, to date, it has only happened once. I just keep hoping for the best that it won't happen again.... BUT, there was one particular doctor I seriously wanted to punch in the face when I was in the hospital and to this day regret not firing him as my doctor. So, my advice would be to not put up with their crap (but sounds like you are already doing a pretty good job at that!).

I dunno, the ER where I worked typically takes these pretty seriously. many times I've seen these tagged red/level 1 (immediately life-threatening). we usually intubate AND chest tube these folks. maybe your particular case isn't life-threatening, but I wouldn't give other people reading this, who may not know any better, false reassurance.
