Coffee?

Good morning lovlies,

So, this morning after the gym i bought a cup of coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker usually but this waking up early thing to go to the gym is starting to take a toll. I love it but I'm exhausted by 1.

What do you think about drinking coffee post workout? Or drinking coffee at all in a general healthy lifestyle?

Re: Coffee?

  • I have coffee every day and since I workout in the morning, I always drink mine post-workout. Most days I'll only have 1 cup, but sometimes I'll have 2. I don't like to drink it black, so I buy the french vanilla sugar-free creamer, and will add about 1 or 2 tbsp. to my coffee. The SF cremer is obviously, sugar-free...but it does have about 1 gram of fat per 2tbsp...which is worth it to me to have a little sweetness in my coffee.

I don't drink much coffee - I prefer tea.  Same caffeine amounts.

I wouldn't drink it post-workout.  Caffeine is a diuretic and it will only dehydrate you more.  At least pair it with lots of water.

As long as you don't pour tons of cream or sugar in there, I don't see the problem.  I drink both black as night so they have almost no calories.
  • Probably 95% of the time I avoid all caffeinated drinks/foods.  I'll have one maybe once a month.  I think if you need stimulants to stay awake/alert, you (general you, not PP) should focus on fixing the problem (by getting more rest) instead of just treating the symptoms.

That is probably a very unpopular opinion, because I know a lot of people drink coffee daily.  I definitely don't mean to offend anyone.

There is nothing wrong with coffee. It has some health benefits. Now, by "coffee" I mean actual brewed coffee, maybe with minimal milk/cream/sugar, not a Caramel vanilla latte frappucino whatever. The daily one-two cups are perfectly fine, as long as you're not abusing coffe as a crutch.

However, as an avid a coffee drinker as I am, I find that coffee too soon post-workout makes me crash and then the rest of the day is a write-off because the mental focus is completely gone. I usually wait 1-2 hours after a workout to have coffee.

I need my two cups of coffee a day. I've tried switching to decaf just to see what would happen, and while I CAN function on decaf if I have to, I choose not to. I enjoy the energy jolt in the morning. Sue me.

I originally thought the same thing. I've always avoided coffee and cafeniated drinks. I can't figure out what the problem is. I sleep a decent amount of time a night. The best that I've found is 7hrs. I have also changed the way I eat from processed and salted foods. I'm trying to eat healthier over all. But when I get up and go to the gym about mid day I am absolutly exhausted where I fall asleep on my lunch breaks.

I'm not sure if this is just my body getting used to physical activity in the morning. I'd perfer not to drink coffee because I'm on weight watchers and don't want to waste my points with coffee and I'm not a big fan of the taste.
  • Libby - Great tip about sugar free coffee creamer. thanks!
Xcaly - I will keep the water in mind, thank you.
  • I drink black coffee on my way to the gym. I ran out of creamer and am too lazy to buy new one. I keep a gallon of water with me in the gym and drink a lot of water. I do notice that it dehydrates. The gallon of water helps with that.
While I agree with lovelyheather, with fixing the symptoms of the tiredness, I choose to drink 2 cups a day. I like the taste and I like the jolt. I try to not go above two cups though.I don't know if my habit is healthy or not. I keep reading conflicting messages. Some say 3 cups a day is fine, some say no to all caffeine. I say, how much is a cup? 12 oz? 20 oz? But I digress. I would say as long as you hydrate, and sleep enough, coffee should be fine.

[QUOTE]Coffee (actual brewed coffee, not sugar-laden espresso drinks) isn't actually a diuretic unless drank in huge amounts (think 7 cups a day).  If you're drinking 7 cups a day of coffee, then you have other problems.

I know there's differing thoughts on this and, truly, caffeine effects everyone differently.  Anything with caffeine makes me pee like crazy.  I still would only recommend drinking water after a work out and breaking out the coffee/tea/soda later in the day.

  • I'm from Seattle.

Coffee is in my blooood :o

  • I could just be that your body is still adjusting to your new schedule.  Obviously taking a nap at work isn't going to be the solution :) I don't see any problem with helping your system make the adjustment, but since you aren't a coffee drinker in the first place, I wouldn't want this to be a permanent solution.

I like kwith's apple suggestion.  I am definitely going to try that the next time I am dragging my feet through the afternoon.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Coffee? : heather, serious, try the apple trick.  Get a really crunchy one, not the super soft golden apples, and it's amazing.  In my experience with my body.

I only like Granny Smith, so I would think those are crunchy enough.  Soft apples are eww!

  • I don't drink that much coffee, only a cup in the morning before work and after working out I drink water so I'm of no help but I think all PP's have given great advice.

I am hooked on green tea however and have about 2 cups a day in between meals.
  • I drink coffee in the mornings sometimes, just depends on whether or not i'm cold. The caffeine doesn't help give me a boost. I inquired about whether or not it makes a difference when i met with my dietician..she said it's better to drink it during the day because the caffeine stays in your system for up to like 8 hours and will later impact your body's ability to go into a deep sleep. Yes, you'll go to sleep but you won't get that deep dreaming sleep that your body needs to fully recharge.  I also try downing at lease 3 -4 glasses of water if i drink coffee to help flush my system a little quicker.
