Vendor Vent

Dear vendors (and all business owners, really),

When you have serious apostrophe abuse and other spelling or grammar mistakes on your website, I don't care how good your services are or how good your reviews are, I will not use you. How you portray yourself in writing in your marketing materials speaks volumes about you as a business person and your professionalism. The good news is that I now have lots of new material to show my students as examples of why good writing is so important!

A free tip: possessive pronouns and contractions and NOTHING ELSE get apostrophes. Those things that get apostrophes must have them; they are not optional! (e.g., "What Make's Us Great" is SO many miles from any semblance of correct punctuation!!!)

Re: Vendor Vent

  • Was this a Chinese Knock-Off wedding dress site by any chance?  Those almost always have attrocious spelling, grammar, and usage problems.  In fact, it's how most people know that a site is run by a disreputable company.

Any legitimate vendors who think that people overlook these mistakes are kidding themselves. People probably think they are scam sites!     This is definitely a good lesson for your students.

  • LOL. No, this was a reputable local photographer!

<div>Yikes!   You would think that people with poor spelling and grammar would get someone to proof-read their text before putting up on the web.   But I suppose that assumes that they know that they need help!</div>

  • Yes!!! The apostrophe is was overused!
  • ITA! I disregarded one photographer whose work I loved because her website was so full of errors that I wonder how she made it through the university she supposedly attended.

  • Yeah, DH and I have been looking into getting a few pictures taken (we've never had professional pictures), and one photographer said she would get back to me 'Tamaro'. . . WTF is that?!

OP, I think you did the right thing. :)

Oh, they do. They ask the "smartest person they know," who also doesn't know their ass from an apostrophe.

My brother is one of these people. I beg him to let me proof-read his stuff and he's convinced that I'm the only person on the planet who notices things like that. That's right, I bought enough copies of Eats, Shoots and Leaves to put it on the NY Times Bestseller list.

<div>I love that book!  My copy came with little adhesive apostrophes in black and white in multiple sizes so the owner could place apostrophes where they were missing, and white out over ones that weren't supposed to be there.   Like on signs and stuff.  Awesome!   </div><div>

  • Ha! I have that book as required reading for my graduate students (who also never seemed to have learned their asses from their apostrophes). I regularly take pictures of signs and billboards to point out the poor punctuation. I'll have to get some of those adhesive apostrophes! Right now I'm so tempted to walk around with large bottles of white-out! :-)
